We have designed our “All-Area All-Star Teams” and have taken a look at a couple of leagues already, but one we have not looked at is one that is trying to make a name for themselves and show that it is not only Longmont that you have to watch out for and they have some good players as well despite coming off of a year where only three teams had a winning season. Let’s take a look at the 4A Northern League.
First Team:
PG: Andrew Duqette – Silver Creek
Duqette is a combo-guard that can score in multiple ways. He gets to the rim and finishes, he is creative with the ball in his hands as a playmaker and also can set up others but he is a shooter. He uses multiple mid-range jump shots and also range to open things up for himself. He also finishes with either hand and despite being the focal point of the scouting report he is a player that can score the basketball. He’s coming off of a year where he put up 15.8 points a game. Let’s see if he can duplicate those numbers while adding a few more wins as well.
SG: Alex Hurr – Mountain View – Sr.
Hurr is a sniper. He shoots lights out from beyond the arc and also can push that to mid-range pull-ups as well. He moves well without the ball and is a player that has to be picked up as soon as he touches half-court. He had some big scoring games as he is a microwave that turns on at a moment’s notice. He is very active on both sides of the ball and this will be a year that is telling as we can see if he can up his stock while putting Mountain View in areas to win.
SF: Jaromy Morgan – Thompson Valley – Jr.
As a sophomore on an underachieving team, it was exciting to see the underclassmen be a player that stepped up for the team. He put up 13 points and four rebounds a game and showed to be a solid wing player that slashed and ran the floor and while he is not a knockdown shooter is able to space the floor as a player you cannot leave open. He finds holes in the defense, he gets his shots up and was his aggressive self no matter who it was they played. This should be a season that Thomas Valley utilizes him more so hopefully he has worked on new parts of his game.
SF/PF: Owen Koonce – Centaurus – Sr.
Koonce had one of the most impressive offseasons on the circuit that we have seen out of anybody this summer. He completely dominated and showed off why he is considered one of the most versatile players we have. He can score, defend, rebound and also showed off a clutch gene as he willed his team to countless victories. He is the best player in the conference and is a player that colleges should be on heavy. Big year for him and a player that definitely boosted his stock. With more than 75% of his team graduating last season it will be up to him to do it all. He seems to be up for the task.
C: Dallas Dye – Longmont
Longmont is a team that has been incredible for the past few seasons as one of the state’s best and just maybe we will see them regress to the norm this year? Well, it all depends on the play of their man in the middle, Dye. Dye is a big-time rebounder that uses his size on both sides of the ball. He has gotten his feet wet as a role player on a contender and now will be passed the torch to take over. Do not be shocked if he averages a double-double this season as a go-to player that can take over.
Bench
Guard: Andrew Wiersema – Thompson Valley – Sr.
Wiersema is an athletic guard that remains aggressive and has potential that needs to be unlocked. He creates mismatches and gets to the rim and finishes. He sees the floor well, understands spacing and gets out on the break. Expect him to step up a bit this season.
Post: Cooper Sheldon – Niwot – Sr.
Sheldon is a player that showed that he could be productive on the court as a role player but with more that will surely be asked of him he will definitely have to alter a few things and step it up. He is able to alter the game in various ways as a scorer that can get going but also rebounding and getting steals as well. He is a glue guy with potential and this has to be a year that he shows that he is for real.
