We did not want to do it the traditional way so wanted to have a bit of fun with it with predicting who we would have on our “All-Area All-Star Teams” and have taken a look at a couple of leagues already, but one we have not looked at is one that has a few good teams that all feel as if they have what it takes to win the 4A Colorado Springs Metro League. Here is who we anticipate will stand out most.
First Team:
PG: Tayzhean Archuleta – Harrison – Jr.
Archuleta is a deadly shooter with range but will be best served as a wing that dissects the defense with his pull-ups. He does not care if there is a defender in his face, he is going to get it off. He finds holes in the defense and makes defenders pay with his soft touch. He can create for himself with great ballhandling but also gets rebounds and takes it coast to coast as seen by his 9.5 points and 2.9 rebounds a game. This should be a year that he truly tries to take over and show that the Harrison boys have a solid group that was right there when it was all said and done. Now they need more.
SG: Donta Dawson – Harrison – Jr.
Dawson put up an impressive 17 points and 6.5 rebounds a game as a sophomore so make no mistake about it, this is his conference. He is the best player in the conference and amongst the top of the class and is a player that really can take over in various ways. He uses his size to dominate inside as a very strong wing that can play multiple positions, he puts the ball on the floor and he also had some insane highlight dunks last season to show off his athleticism as well. Dawson has a game that translates to the next level because he is versatile and skilled and when he realizes his full potential –watch out.
SF: McKinnon Walker – Classical Academy – Sr.
Want to talk about an athlete. Walker has the full package and was one of the top scorers in the Springs last season as he put up a whopping 19 points a game and averaged seven rebounds as well. He put up double-digit scoring in every single game last season and had a few games that he exploded for 25+.
Walker is an offensive weapon with plenty in his arsenal and is one that we sadly have not written about enough. He is a two-way player that makes teammates better and with another big year should again be one of the top scorers in the state. Huge year for him and we will surely get out to check him out.
SF/PF: Micah Lamberth – Classical Academy
He is one of the more complete players in the entire conference and from what we saw from him this summer he has made a jump. He has it all as he can shoot, set teammates up and also rebound and start the break himself. He is a wing that can take over at lead guard as well, he can knock down open shots and I feel as though he can improve on an already 12.4 points, 4.5 assists, 6.3 rebounds and also over two steals a game as well. He proved that it does not matter who it is that is in front of him he is able to compete and he is my dark-horse pick for MVP of the conference. Make sure you check him out this year.
C: Imani Grigsby – Sierra – Sr.
Grigsby is no Center by any means but if asked to go on the block and defend a bigger guy he could, just as well as staying out on the perimeter for a guard. He put up 13.5 points and 6.4 rebounds. He has some solid instincts and seems to be at the right spot at all times. He rebounds, scores on the block and is a versatile defender. His production has to be matched by his teammates and that must translate to wins.
Bench
Guard: Dailen Terry – Sierra – Sr.
9.7 points, 2.4 rebounds and will have to up his assists a game as he is a guard that can serve as a playmaker. He’s difficult to stay in front of and he finished off last season in a bit of a rhythm. We did not see him this summer but know that he has been working on his game and will be ready to turn things around for Sierra who has been struggling mightily.
Guard: Tim Mewborn – Widefield – Sr.
Mewborn has the makings to be an elite scoring option. He is a marksman from deep with one of the smoothest shooting strokes you will see. He can get his shot off with only a bit of space and it is interesting to see the lead guard pull up on the fast break and in transition. He is a confident guard that can get the team going offensive. He plays the passing lanes well and also is a defender that anticipates and times which gives him easy scoring opportunities.
Wing: Seth Newton – Canon City – Jr.
Newton is a combo-guard that can handle the ball as well as put the ball in the basket. He has good size and is not afraid to let it fly. He put up 8.2 points and 7.8 rebounds a game and showed that he is capable of altering the game in various ways. He scored when he was called upon and with a big junior year upcoming he will look to build on that and up his game.
Post: Randall Days—Widefied – Sr.
Days is a wing that gets down on the block and takes over. He is a player that plays with immense strength and powers his way through. He denies open shots, he slashes and goes up for easy finishes and this year will be one that he shows that he is able to open up as a ball-handler that can create for others.
