While a number of guys were missing due to football – most notably Jamison Guerra and Blake Jensen at Sherwood – there were still plenty of players participating that made it worth our while to visit recently. Here’s a look at the top players we noticed.
Ethan Abrahamson (2020 Gresham)
Abrahamson is a long and lanky wing who has a real knack for scoring. The 6-foot-3 senior has a really smooth stroke from long range and was knocking down catch-and-shoot jumpers, especially on the baseline, but also can score off the dribble. He nailed a few fadeaways and also finished well around the cup. We caught up with Abrahamson and will have a spotlight piece posted soon.
Elijah Munyan (2021 Gresham)
Munyan transfers in from Columbia Christian and he will be an instant contributor. The 6-foot-3 wing is an incredible athletic specimen and could be the best leaper in the state. He simply plays above the rim and in addition to throwing down one dunk on the break, also converted an alleyoop where he easily caught the ball up high and slammed it down. His shot is still a work in progress but he canned a couple of wide open jumpers.
Esyah Pippa-White (2023 Gresham)
We are pretty convinced that Pippa-White will make an instant impact for the Gophers. The freshman point guard was on fire from the outside, hitting catch-and-shoot shots but also a number of pull-ups from deep. He handed the ball with confidence and was finding open guys on the perimeter and in transition. There will undoubtedly be bumps in the road as he’s continually learning but his upside is very high.
Drew Larsen (2021 Gresham)
A member of Gresham’s football team, Larsen hasn’t been participating much in open gym workouts according to Gresham head coach Erik Lyslo but he’ll be a key guy on the team. The 6-foot-1 junior is well-built, willing to battle on the boards, and has a nice face-up jumper that he displayed often on the court.
Asher Krauel (2021 Sherwood)
One thing we immediately noticed about Krauel is that he looks bigger and stronger, the result of some good work in the weight room according to Sherwood head coach Rahim Tufts. The 6-foot-1 guard was strong with the basketball, converting tough hoops in the paint but also demonstrating a soft touch on his perimeter shot. Defensively he was aggressive on the ball.
Caden Davis (2021 Sherwood)
Tyler Hix was one of the state’s top three-point bombers last season and there’s no question that the shots he left behind will be easily taken up by Davis. The 6-foot-1 junior is a no-conscience bomber and he’s liable to pull up from 25 feet the second he touches the ball. Davis was making his shots in open gym though as his lightning-quick release is very difficult to catch up with, especially when he’s wide open.
