After playing the past couple of years on the Marshall High School campus, the Generals are truly back at home as Grant High School has been fully rebuilt. You can still smell the paint drying at the brand new gym and we dropped by on Tuesday night for the first open gym session of October.
While all the guys playing football were being held out – namely Max von Arx (2022), Jae’Sean Pate (2022), and Donald “Chili” Stephens Jr (2023) – all the other guys who will be playing varsity this upcoming season were in attendance. Here’s a quick look at how they did.
Eric Fraser (2020) – Fraser had it going in all phases of the game on the scoring end. He was spotting up for jumpers, taking it strong to the basket, and making all the right plays simply taking whatever the defense gave him. He was solid defensively as well. He’s fresh off a recruiting visit to Colorado School of Mines that went well and his next visit will be to OIT in a couple of weeks.
Tai Warner (2020) – As you might expect, Warner was pretty dominant offensively. He sank deep threes, took it strong to the basket and used his strength to finish, and pretty much did whatever he wanted to. What stood out out to us on this night was his defense. He was constantly putting pressure on his man and came up with a number of steals that led to easy buckets.
Emanuel Steward (2020) – Similar to Warner, Steward was able to exert some dominance on the offensive end. While his outside shot wasn’t falling as well, he converted some tough drives to the hoop. Steward also used his length to disrupt on defense, whether it was on steals or coming over and getting some blocked shots.
Garrett Brown (2020) – This was the second time in the last week we’ve seen Brown and he’s really grown on us. At a solid 6-foot-7 he’s got great size to help Grant out inside but he’s a deadeye shooter as well. In particular, his go-to shot – a simple step back fadeaway three to the left – was money all night. It will be interesting to see how he matches up against other guys his size this season.
Luke Winkler (2021) – Winkler really caught our eye. He flashed the best ball-handling skills out of anyone in open gym and was very shifty and crafty off the dribble. A pure point guard, he was constantly looking to hit open teammates on cuts to the basket or out past the three-point line. His own shot was really smooth from the outside when he did decide to shoot. Winkler could very well be a sleeper contributor this year on varsity at Grant.
Cole Bernius (2022) – Bernius was another young General that caught our eye. Already about 6-foot-2 and still growing – he sports a size 16 shoe – he’s long and athletic and flashed a nice-looking jumper. Bernius is still rather lanky and needs more strength and experience, but he’s definitely a young guy to watch going forward in the Grant program.
Adrian Mosley (2023) – We’ve seen a little bit of Mosley during AAU season so we were anxious to see a bit more out of him at open gym. He was often playing on the other side of the gym, but from what we caught we saw a versatile swingman who’s a good ball-handler and passer as well as tough enough to battle inside for boards and on defense. According to Grant assistant coach Russell Millage, Mosley will be playing on varsity this season.
