Continue ReadingRanking players is always a fluid situation. These days kids are playing 365, providing more and more opportunities for players to showcase their skills. Since the summer rankings were released, several players have proven that they should be on the list, others displayed why they should be higher. In this article PH takes a look at some of the players that raised their stock the most.
Braden Lamar 6’5 SF Bishop Gorman (13 – 10) – The more I watch of Lamar, the more I see small school all conference type of player. He has good size for his position, a signature skill, and most importantly, he’s used to winning. He would be the main guy on most teams in the state. On a talented Gorman squad he’ll have to play his role, however he’ll have plenty of opportunities to make plays in some of the biggest high school basketball games of the season.
Amari James 6’4 SG Spring Valley (46 – 19) – I was flat out wrong about James in my original rankings. Watching him, it’s clear to see that even on his worst day he’s a top 25 guy. Great size and strength for his position. James has a college ready frame, and is a knock down shooter.
Ray Daniels 6’6 SF Somerset Loose (33 – 22) – Hardest prospect for me to rank in the class of 2020. Only played a handful of games at a 3A school. Watched him play a little this summer, but not enough to catch one of his signature games. Around the city he’s known as a scorer, and several players mention him as one of the toughest players to guard. Physically he looks the part. Long athletic wing, that scores in a variety of ways. He already has a D1 offer from Rider, and if he stays healthy, is probably going to lead the state in scoring this season.
Alexander Spaight 6’0 PG Canyon Springs (32 – 15) – Spaight just got better. I’m going to put together my all in the gym team and you’re going to have to show me a guy that beats Spaight. Relentless worker, who studies the game physically and mentally. He’s grown into a pure PG that allows his team to play at a winning tempo. He will have the ball in his hands and I expect him to throw up more than one 30 point night this season.
Zarius Benson – Moore 6’4 SG Canyon Springs (34 – 30) – ZBM is a transfer, that hasn’t been unleashed yet. Prototypical size and length to be a dominant defender from 1 to 3. He plays with two other guys capable of getting their own, assuming he plays to his potential, Canyon Springs would have one of the most lethal trios in the city.
Harlan Nichols 6’5 PF Palo Verde (UR – 36) – His coaches love him. He plays with relentless effort. High- Academic player that’s gaining attention from some west coast D3’s. Nichols is part of 4 returning starters for a disciplined Palo squad, who has an opportunity to be one of the states top rebounders, and low post scorers.
Nicholas Attanasio 6’3 SG Faith Lutheran (UR – 49) – Faith Lutheran is one of the teams on my must see list this season. Attanasio is a big part of why. The lefty is a knock down shooter. During the grassroots season, I was impressed with the way he was able to get his shot off against, stronger more athletic players. He has received serious interest from D2 Berry University, and may pick up more as the season goes on.
