Continue ReadingAthlete comparisons have become a popular tool in the world of scouting, recruiting, and draft coverage. It’s one of the best ways to get a feel for a player’s game. While no comparison is perfect, it is still a worthwhile practice. With that in mind, I’ve come up with NBA comps for some of the best point guards in the class of 2023. Keep in mind that these are not projections and be on the lookout for more NBA comparison articles in the near future!
Tristen Kailey – 2023 PG (Nike EAD 2023 Black)
NBA Comp – Luka Doncic
Luka Doncic has quickly become one of the best young stars in the association. The reigning NBA Rookie of the Year isn’t listed as a point guard, but he essentially operates as one for the Dallas Mavericks. He is a tremendous scorer and playmaker, which is one of the reasons I’ve chosen him as the comp for Tristen Kailey. The 2023 prospect is a tall guard who can make plays for himself and his teammates. His height allows him to see over the defense. Like Doncic, Kailey is an assertive scorer who can get it done at all three levels offensively. Both players are crafty finishers inside, as well as excellent jump shooters from distance. These are two guys who are a ton of fun to watch.
Ma’Syn Howell – 2023 6’0 PG Legacy School of Sports Science
NBA Comp – Damian Lillard
Lillard is a top five-point guard in the NBA. He is a cold-blooded killer when he is on the hardwood. The four-time All Star is an elite floor general with a quick first step and a smooth jumper. I was reminded of Lillard while watching Ma’Syn Howell compete at The Next Wave camp a few months ago. Similar to Lillard, Howell is electric when the ball is in his hands. He makes opposing players play at his tempo. Both Lillard and Howell are effective on the drive as well as from behind the arc. They are extremely versatile at the offensive end. Another characteristic these two share is their decision-making ability. Howell is particularly good in that area when leading the break.
Jamyron Keller Jamyron Keller 6'1" | PG Killeen Ellison | 2023 State #154 Nation TX – 2023 6’0 PG (Urban ASAK 14U) Ellison HS
NBA Comp – Mike Conley
Everybody who keeps up with the NBA knows what I am about to say. Nevertheless, I’ll say it anyway. Mike Conley is perhaps the most underrated player in the entire National Basketball Association. The veteran point guard is a stud at both ends, which is why I’ve decided to compare him to 2023 point guard Jamyron Keller Jamyron Keller 6'1" | PG Killeen Ellison | 2023 State #154 Nation TX . The freshman put on a show at the Prep Hoops Top 250 Expo last month. Keller is a great three-point shooter who can also use his athleticism and quickness to split double teams and get to the hoop. Additionally, he is really good on defense too. He can lock up on the perimeter and has quick hands which enables him to force opponents into turnovers, not unlike Conley.
