NBA Stylistic Comparison: 1995 Jazz Jeff Hornacek
College Projection: NAIA.
Jackson Garner is a 5’11” scoring guard, or perhaps a combo guard. His shooting makes him either a sizzling shooter in a point guard’s body or a smaller combo with ok handle and exceptional shooting.
Shot preparation is extremely consistent.
Garner projects as s D3/NAIA catch-and-shoot dream. Garner’s movement off the ball rivaled Masyn Winningham for best in camp. If paired with an astute backcourt mate, then Garner will be a threat to score after every route he runs to “the spot.”
The modern game, at the NBA level, is all-consumed with shooting and floor spacing. Not suggesting that he is an NBA-level player, but Garner’s style and shooting prowess lends itself to that ultra modern game. Garner can stretch and pull a defense away from the paint. Will his high school team have the pieces to compliment his style? Will they be able to utilize him properly? It can be difficult and Clinton High School will field a competitive team.
Last season Clinton High finished 19-15 with impressive wins over Karns, Carter, Powell, and Knoxville Central.
For Garner to play beyond high school he must improve his lateral mobility. This is a common theme from PrepHoopsTN, but it holds with almost every player. ‘Can they defend their position at the next level?’ The answer for Garner right now is…maybe. He isn’t slow. He also isn’t a burner. Can he slide the feet and put his chest in the way of a quick guard? It is an imperative and it takes more than a little work to reach that point. Faster feet must merge with hyper-aware basketball savvy. Improving his upper body strength is also important. So much of elite basketball is simple strength and holding your ground in mid-air challenges.
Nice lower body balance on every shot. Garner’s form is great because it starts from the ground up. There was a murmur that he works with a shooting coach in his free time. That is entirely believable considering the wide legs and fluid release. Puts in the work on improving his shot outside of gameday. Garner’s shot is repeatable, consistent form. Nice arc.
Jackson will be a starter this junior season for Clinton’s Dragons.
