Huibregtse Commits to Wright State
Alex Huibregtse went into his junior season as a relatively unknown prospect — certainly not on the radar of any Division 1 programs. However, the Grafton standout will head into the 2019-20 with a full D1 scholarship in hand.
Following an official visit to Wright State, Huibregtse picked up an offer and committed on the spot, becoming the 10th player in Wisconsin’s 2020 class to commit to a D1 program.
“I feel like I fit in really well with their system and how they run things,” Huibregtse told Prep Hoops Wisconsin. “I also really like the coaching staff they have there and the winning culture.”
Huibgretse chose the Raiders over UW-Milwaukee and a Division 2 scholarship offer from Winona State. While from the outside Huibregtse’s commitment may have appeared to be a spur of the moment decision, he had previously gotten a good feeling from Wright State a few months ago.
“When I went on my unofficial in August I really liked the campus and the staff, so when I came for my official and they said they were going to extend an offer, I was excited,” he said. “I wanted to see if I fit in with the guys on the team and once I got to know the guys I pretty much knew this was the place for me.”
As a junior, Huibregtse averaged 21.0 points, 6.1 rebounds, and 4.6 assists per game en route to being named a first-team All-Conference pick in the North Shore. The 6-foot-3 guard is the third commit for the Raiders in their 2020 recruiting class.
“They just said how they like my ability to spread the floor with shooting and my skill set,” Huibregtse explained. “They said that they can really see me fitting in with the system.”
Originally beginning the travel season with Phenom University NY2LA, Huibregtse worked his way up through the ranks, eventually earning a role on the EYBL squad. Showing he could compete on the Nike circuit, Huibregtse trusted the process and turned his dreams into reality.
“It was tough in the beginning, but it just goes to show if you keep working and stay the course, you’ll eventually get noticed,” he said.
