Sticking with the thematic name of the camp I’ve chosen to evaluate prospects in financial analogies. Here are five “hold” prospects. Meaning players whose reputation and skills are fairly well established and did nothing to diminish that standing on Sunday. I gave you five “buy low” prospects earlier in the week.
- Joseph Ostrowsky 5-11 2020 Mount Pleasant. Made the “long” trip to participate and played like he had been on these courts many times before. Definition of a power point guard. Not an overwhelming athlete for his size but plays with a wide strong base to make up for it. Strikes the difficult balance of playing under control but also with aggressiveness. Penetrates very hard but will dish when there is nothing at the rim. Good ball handler and shooter. Nothing flashy but a very solid point guard prospect. Will lead one of the top teams in Mid Michigan this year so exposure should not be an issue.
- Ty Wyman 6-6 2021 Blissfield Continued to display the skill set that will make him one of the top small school prospect in the 2021 class. The perimeter shot is always pure but it was nice to see him slow down the mechanics in the drill stations. Like watching an artist start with a blank canvas. What sets him apart from other shooters is the vertical size and impeccable footwork. A really tight handle might be all that separates him from elite prospect status. Excellent grades make a him an even more appealing recruit.
- Mason Docks 6-0 2022 Williamson Similar to 2020 prospect Jamoni Jones (East Kentwood) Docks doesn’t exactly move around the court, it’s more like a effortless glide. Gets wherever he needs to with seemingly fewer dribbles than other prospects. Already possesses a true jump shot with natural elevation and the appropriate release point. Could improve as a distributor but is by no means simply a gunner looking for his own shot. The improvement he has shown in that area from when I saw him as a Freshmen at an MLK Classic at Saginaw Valley until to now is already marked. Feels like he’s been around a while but he’s only a Sophomore. Athletic ability gives him a very high ceiling. Also doesn’t hurt that he is playing on a very talented team. Teammates Cade Conley, Brandon Hunt, and J Wallace turned in solid performances as well.
- Nolan Finkbeiner 5-9 2021 Hemlock Showed the full package throughout all portions of the camp. Stood out with overall skill in a field packed with point guard prospects. Fearless guard who put his team on his back on more than one occasion. Plenty of quickness but plays a steady under control floor game. More of a set shot than a jump shot at this point, but quick release allows him to get it off effectively. Despite size he is extremely clever and is not likely to get smothered on the perimeter by longer defenders. One thing this summer has shown is that if you like your point guards in a 6 foot and under package the Tri-City region is the place to be. See #1 above, Jacob Tomsich (Midland Dow), and the Saginaw duo among others are going to make this a fun area to catch some backcourt battles.
- Myles Johnson 6-3 2021 Portage Northern Perhaps the most athletic wing in the entire camp. Johnson was electric in the open court. That was readily apparent when I saw him playing up a level with Camp Darryl this summer in Fort Wayne. It was nice to see him developing some of the more subtle nuances of his half court game. Showed improved ball handling and perimeter shot. However the open court is still where he is most comfortable. Exploded to the rim on more than one occasion for big finishes. If he can put the entire package together this will be an intriguing wing prospect.
