Dinos Trigonis has had his finger tips on the pulse of Grassroots basketball for quite sometime and his best accomplishment, in my humble opinion, is the creation of these all region frosh/soph camps that take place in California, Texas, Illinois, and New Jersey. The camps are chock full of elite prospects and this was the exact case in California as super sophs Kijani Wright and Aidan Shaw took home MVP honors—and rightfully so.
Jordan Ross (Pleasant Grove/UT)
2023, PG, 6-foot, 150 pounds
Joel’s Take: There are a plethora of outstanding point guard prospects in the Class of 2023—and Ross is right near the top. Youthful frame with long arms, solid speed and quickness off the dribble, and an evolving middle game. He sees the floor well and his passing acumen is impressive considerinng his age. He can knock in the 3-ball as well to add to his growing arsenal His ability to change speeds in the open court kept defenders off balance.
Justin Daniels (Mater Dei)
2023, SG, 6-foot-4, 160 pounds
Joel’s Take: Daniels, who is the younger brother of DeAndre Daniels who won a National Title at Connecticut, has an impressive skill set as well. Blessed with good length, his ball skills and scoring package are impressive. He got to the basket at will and converted buckets in a variety of ways (L/R-hand finishes, floaters, etc.). To keep his driving game consistent, he’ll need to improve his outside shot.
Lewis Duarte (Veritas Prep)
2022, WF, 6-foot-5, 170 pounds
Joel’s Take: This willowy wing-type was all over the court, especially in transition. He runs well and explode to the rim for the finish. If the lane is defended well, he’ll nail the jump shot from deep. He’ll need to gain strength as his frame fills out to finish though contact at a more consistent clip, but he is talented.
Jared McCain (Corona/Centennial)
2023, PG, 6-foot, 155 pounds
Joel’s Take: McCain has been one of the biggest revelations this fall as he has more than held his own despite his youth. He pushes the ball hard in transition, delivers look-ahead passes with either hand, and can convert at the rim. His jump shot is playable to keep defenses honest, but what may be his most impressive trait, is his poise and savvy.
Mekhi Mason (Chandler/AZ)
2022, PG, 6-foot, 160 pounds
Mason plays the game at a great pace and possesses a nice frame for the next levelJoel’s Take: Mason was a definite surprise with his consistent play from the point guard position, but Arizona-based scout Greg Rosenberg assured me Mason has the goods. His frame consists of long arms and overall ideal length for the position. He plays the game at a great pace and gets to where he needs to go off the dribble. His decision-making is tight and he shows a nice blend of facilitating and scoring in his repretoire.
