Several 2020 players will be favorited (Colby Jones, Kam Woods, Rongie Gordon), but the race could get interesting this season. The last couple seasons, Trendon Watford had the award wrapped up. I am not really sure how the award is voted on, but Watford was clearly the best player in the state the last 2 seasons. Here are 5 athletes that could be named Mr. Basketball:
Tommy Murr (Lindsey Lane)- Murr is a 2020 prospect that receives national attention for his scoring numbers. What hurts the 6’1 guard’s chances of winning the award is the level of competition he will compete against. A lot of people don’t want to see the award go to someone from a 1A school. If Murr can lead Lindsey Lane to a deep playoff run, he will have a shot at the award.
Trey Bonham (UMS-Wright)- Bonham had a monster summer. This kid is going to dominate the coastal region this season. The 5’11 point guard can really score the ball and make plays on both ends of the court. Production and team success will go a long way for Bonham.
JD Davison (Calhoun)- JD is a monster athlete and will produce near triple double numbers. JD is a 2021 Top 50 prospect who is a human highlight reel. This kid is a special talent. The 6’3 guard makes big time plays on both ends of the court.
Brody Peebles (Hartselle)- Peebles is another 2021 prospect that I see with a shot at the award. He’s a D1 prospect who will have the ball in his hands. This kid can score at all 3 levels and can really make plays. Team success would be critical for Peebles winning the award.
Tyrese Elliot (Sparkman)- Elliot is a 2022 prospect who has taken his game to the next level. The 6’1 combo guard will have the opportunity to compete against quality competition in 7A, and he will have the ball in his hands a lot. D1 programs are already recruiting Elliot.
