Made up of smaller schools, the Buckeye doesn’t lack players that can go! Here we breakdown a preview with some predictions.
Predictions:
Otto Kuhns will lead the conference in scoring: As a junior the talented guard was a bucket at all times. Kuhns can scorch a team with his shooting ability and athletic enough to finish. A division l quarterback in the near future, Kuhns is also super talented on the hardwood. Averaging 22 points last season for Bloom Carroll, expect to see an even bigger output for Kuhns. With his length he is a tough player to defend for wings. This winter will be another special one for the senior.
It could be the year for Fairfield Union to take the conference: Fairfield Union was solid last season five games over .500 and going 9-5 in league play. The Falcons lost their leading scorer from last season, but return some talent. Chase Poston returns as their go to guy and could see a big jump up from around 10 points a game as season ago. Fairfield Union also returns junior Ryan Magill who will take a step forward next season with the falcons. Returning size on paper looks like something that could benefit this team. Don’t be surprised if they are at the top when it’s all said and done.
Circleville is another team that will be young, but should improve: Plain and simple last year wasn’t great for the Circleville hoops squad. A 7-15 season and just two conference wins was tough for this team that lost a few seniors. The Tigers will be a team set up with a couple juniors that can go. Riley Gibson is a target for first team all-conference and even player of the year in the Buckeye division. Look for junior Evan Justice to play a bigger role for the Circleville as well. Younger players will be the key in a better season. It’s all about improvement.
Despite a possible favorite, the conference is going to be tough night in and night out: The great thing about covering smaller school’s games is the level of competition. These kids always compete and don’t get caught up in the hype that you some times see in the bigger schools matchup, they let their play do the talking. This season should be once again a tough road to a conference title. Fairfield Union, Teays Valley and Logan Elm could all be right there at the top when it’s all said and done, any matchups between the three will be huge. Look for Hamilton Township and even Bloom Carroll to be improved if they can build around Kuhns. There won’t be any off nights in this league, or else it could be a long four quarters for a team.
Watch out for Teays Valley once again: Teays Valley was able to run things last season in the MSL-Buckeye. With an 11-3 record they grabbed themselves a conference title, but they lost a ton to graduation. A huge part of their production is gone and there are shoes to fill. The good thing about this is that the Vikings have the players to do it. As a junior Riely Weiss was solid in a secondary role and competed hard night in and night out. A prime target to take over as the teams best player is Weiss, who will man point guard duties for Teays. Expect another well balanced attack from the Vikings with multiple players who can score it.
