Q: How’s the whole recruitment process been for you so far ? We don’t see Ivy League recruitment often especially in Fayetteville.
Zavian: Man it’s been a blessing , just seeing that all the hard work that I’ve put in on the court and in the classroom has all paid off. You have to be a special type of person for certain level schools to look at you so I’m extremely blessed and appreciate all of it.
Q: You were considered a sleeper prospect for a while after playing at a high level for years and still not getting looks. Of course there was questions from some if you could do the same things in private school athletics that you did in public school. Did you hear any of the talk and did it motivate you?
Zavian: I heard it all, especially how Fayetteville is because everybody knows each other pretty much and talks to each other. I just used it as motivation and I had pretty good year, but I think this year will be even better, not just individually but as a team as well. We lost in the state Championship last year and this year the goal is to win it.
Q: You guys lost your starting PG to graduation but you bring back 2020 Wings Justin Thomas & Josh Reid who are both talented. Will this year be more of a leadership thing for you?
Zavian: Definitely but it’s nothing new to me, my last year at Overhills that was my role and I even had that role somewhat my first year at Village. This year is different, I’m a Senior and in a few days I won’t have to worry about recruitment stuff because I will have my decision made. Which will allow me to put all my focus on the season, and not just for the team this year but also the younger guys as we have two very talented sophomores. I just want to make sure that I help show them the right roads to take so that way when the seniors leave they can still carry it out.
Q: So let’s talk about your recruitment, what visits did you go on and have you cut down your list or is it still at 6?
Zavian: Officially I visited: Catawba, VMI, Brown, Columbia & Dartmouth. My final four list is: Campbell, Columbia, Brown & Dartmouth.
Q: Going into the decision making process what were some of the things that you looked for in a school?
Zavian: First off I just want to say I’m blessed and appreciative to all the schools that recruited me. They took time out to evaluate a guy that didn’t have a lot of clout to his name, so I appreciate all of that. As far as college decision goes it was just going somewhere that I could enhance myself as a man and as a person. As a basketball player and as a person I just want to be the best that I can be. There has always been a saying I’ve had which is “ I want to be a millionaire by the time I’m 35” . The schools that I narrowed it down to all give me that opportunity. Definitely I want to be a pro at whatever level that is, of course to get to the NBA which is every basketball players dream. However I have a good idea of what I want life to be like for me after basketball, I have a plan for myself if that doesn’t work out and at the end of the day just being the best person that I could possibly be.
Q: Last question, for a kid that’s going through the process now and doesn’t have any offers, what’s your advice to them ?
Zavian: Stay the course, do you what you have to do to be successful. Never doubt yourself, work hard to be great, you just have to be willing to do what you have to do.
