PF Raekwon Drake (Wabash Valley College – Sophomore
Raekwon still has elite athleticism from his days at Orr. Drake was very active he looked great on the defensive end guarding different positions. His ability to cover on the wings and guard posts is a tremendous asset for any team at the next level. He’s still considered undersized four at 6’5”, but he showed some improvement offensively from the wing. A couple times the ball was swung his way and he drove straight to the rim. He finished one play where he dunked over the defender. Drake still looks the part and will be fun to watch on a deep Wabash roster.
G Damari Nixon (Kankakee – Freshman)
Nixon played exceptional in his game against Wabash. He has excelled so far at playing on the ball more as a lead guard. Damari does a good job at getting to the paint area and making mid-range jumpers. Against Wabash he was part of an early scoring run for Kankakee. Nixon distributed the ball well in transition and made the right decision each time he touched the ball. Also part of this run he made two deep three pointers to show he’s adding to his range. PHI will expect some LM schools to start checking in on Nixon around the end of the season.
SG Bobby Harvey (Wabash Valley – Sophomore)
After having a slow start in the first game Harvey opened up some eyes in a shootout with Jonte Coleman (Kankakee). Bobby hit a rhythm where it looked impossible to miss a shot. He was able to find spots on the court while his teammates drove in the lane. He made several threes from the corner and the wing. A major upgrade in his game was his ability to take the right shots and not forcing shots just because he has the ball. Harvey is still very athletic and gritty on defense. Causing disturbances while playing the passing lane turning a couple steals into transition dunks. After spending a year at a D2 his knowledge of the game has grown and I believe a D1 will find him intriguing
PF Khalid Herron (Morton – Freshman)
Mr. Herron showed some flashes in the first game for Morton. He was able to make some really heady plays around the rim. Khalid is really good back to the basket post guy that does a great job at battling for position. He rebounded well in his area often battling bigger and stronger players. Just a freshman Herron will have some time to create some buzz for himself.
PG Marcus Garrett (Wabash Valley – Sophomore)
Spark plug on both ends of the floor. Marcus really showed his maturity at the point guard position doing a little bit of everything. Coming out of Hillcrest he was known as a good on ball defender that didn’t back down from anyone. He is that and more now as a sophomore. Garrett controlled the pace of the game on offense and D. He turned ball handlers with his in your face pressure, which led to either steals or speeding up guys into turnovers. Marcus was terrific in the half court as well showing his ability to create and make pinpoint passes as well as show he too can score on all three levels. It’s safe to say if Garrett continues to play at that pace he is a can’t miss D1 prospect.
G Shawn Marlow (Morton – Sophomore)
Marlow is a double digit scorer returning who has Curry range on his shots. Shawn is much better when he’s off the ball. He was able to get his shot going when teammates got in the lane and kicked it out with him. Marlow has a thin frame and still needs to work on his handling some more. What he does do well is make shots which will always translate to any team that goes against zones defenses. On defense he’s scrappy and can be effective with his on ball defense and guarding full court. Small school prospect with deep range.
PF Amir Yusuf (Wabash Valley – Sophomore)
Yusuf was maybe the best player I saw at the event. He is a burly 6’9” post with good footwork. Amir was able to score every time he got his hand s on the ball. His ability to move and score with jump hooks and a couple of up and under moves grabs your attention first. But Yusuf seemed to be around every rebound whether it was short or long ones. In a rare play Amir was caught out trapping a player on the wing which led to a steal and him pushing the ball like a guard for a layup in transition. Yusuf is no doubt a mid-major plus post guy who could be effective in the right system.
