Pre-Season Player of the Year:
This season MVP is returning from last season where he was crowned MVP as a junior. Kasen Harrison looks to continue to hold the mantle up as he leads the Timberwolves to another good season. He is also committed to Lamar University right in his own backyard. Last year he averaged 15.1 points per game, dished out 3 assists per game, and 2.3 steals per game. He shot 64 percent from the field and 32 percent from behind the arc. He was also the leading scorer in the district last season.
Team to Beat:
Beaumont United Timberwolves are in their second varsity season as a school and look to repeat on last years success as the best team in the district. They finished 13-1 in district play and went 26-7 overall on the year as they made it to the third round of the playoffs last year. They look to push further than they did last season. They have a lot of prospects and on paper look like a big time contender from Region III of the 6A classification. They will look to returning MVP to lead things for them in Lamar University commit senior Kasen Harrison. Look for solid play from fellow seniors Justin Pleasant and Tyrese Baker in the front court. They have a nice young core coming up also who will be big factors on the varsity level as well in sophomore Terrance Arceneaux, freshman Wesley Yates, and freshman Traelyn Prochia.
Biggest Threat:
One of the threats in the district will be North Shore Mustangs. North Shore is coming fresh off of a UIL State appearance from last season as they finished with an 33-4 overall record and finished second in the district with a 12-2 record. They loss a couple of key prospects from last years run but return enough fire power for them to still be a threat in the district to challenge for first place. They will be led by Joshua Cooper who is currently ranked 111th in the State of Texas for his class. He averaged 7.4 points per game and 2.6 assist per game. Fellow senior classmate Randy Woodard will provide some offensive fire power as well as some glass cleaning abilities and junior guard Deveon Taylor is a big-time deep ball shooter.
Another team that should not be over-looked is the West Brook Bruins. They only loss three prospects from last season. Returning a lot of key pieces this year will make for great team chemistry. Last season the Bruins went 22-11 overall and 10-4 in district play. They fell in the first round of the playoffs last season. They will receive big contributions from senior post Stayve Thomas and junior point guard JaQuan Yates and will have a nice rotation to go around them.
Sleeper:
A team that should get that fourth and final spot for a playoff birth from the district is Channelview High School. Last season they went 4-10 in district play but expect them to have more wins and get that fourth spot. They will be led by senior guards Isaiah Hamilton and Shandon Brown.
