Pre-Season Player of the Year:
Reggie Comeaux as seen in the picture is one of the most underrated prospects in the Greater Houston area. Reggie is tough both physically and mentally and has spring boards on the bottom of his feet. He is the most athletic player in his class from the Greater Houston area. His outside game continues to develop as he is becoming a better deep ball shooter. He was District Newcomer of the Year last season. Lonzo Rand really helped himself over the Spring/Summer as one of the best scorers from the Greater Houston area for his class. The senior will be a handful for opponents as he is able to score the ball at all levels at a high rate. He has already scored multiple 40 point outings during fall ball.
Team to Beat:
Spring Westfield Mustangs will be the team to beat in this District. Last season they went 9-5 in District play to secure the fourth spot and gained a playoff berth were they loss in the first round. Finished 18-14 overall on the season. Started out pretty rough and ironed out a lot of kinks and rebuilt their roster, where they then went on a 6 game winning streak. Look for this high pace team to put that half-court pressure on everyone they play. They will be anchored by these prospects Senior shooting guard Lonzo Rand, Senior post 6’5 PF Tyson Anderson, Junior point guard Ja’dyn Chaney, and Sophomore combo forward Willie Williams who earned all district 1st team as a freshman last season and is averaging around 21 points per game during fall ball this year.
Biggest Threat:
Aldine Nimitz Cougars will be the biggest threat in the District. Talk about one of the best front courts in high school basketball. Nimitz went 16-15 overall (10-4) in district play and finished second in the district and loss in the first round of the playoffs. The Cougars will be led by the front-court running mates of Senior small forward Reggie Comeaux and Junior power forward Ashton Smith who has picked up several D1 offers over the summer. They will also receive contributions from Senior point guard Antione Rose and Sophomore point guard 6’1 Kentrelle Royston who will surprise a lot of people with his athleticism.
Sleeper:
Spring Dekaney is not a team that everyone should be over looking right away. Expect a big time turn from last years performance with the Wildcats and Coach Stpehens. David Cattell will be the senior leader for his team. He has been playing at a high level and has picked up an offer because of his play. They will also have junior forward Var’Keyes Gumms and All-District 1st team member back once football season is over. They are returning a lot of players from last season and they are playing team ball, also expect contributions from senior wing Devion Medlow and junior guard Lamont Lawrence.
