Continue ReadingThe class of 2022 has lots of potential. Despite the players only having one varsity season under their belts, six of them already hold offers from high major programs. The 2022 talent might be the deepest of all the classes. Here are some common trends in the first rankings of the 2022 class.
Abundance of backcourt talent
The class of 2022 is loaded with talented guards. The top 14 players are guards with Hudson Catholic’s Zion Cruz headlining the list. He is not the only elite talent in the class as Bergen Catholic’s Will Richardson has all the makings of a big-time player.Corey Floyd Jr. would be a superstar on any other team in the state, but he plays on a loaded Roselle Catholic team.
Mark Armstrong had a solid freshman season and should put up big numbers for St. Peter’s Prep. Players like Otega Oweh, Elijah Perkins and Ben Roy would be some of the top guards in their class, but are stuck in a class of full high level guards. Glassboro’s Keon Sabb is one of the top athletes in the class as he is one of the top football players in the country. New Jersey has always had a rich tradition of guard play and the 2022 class is a perfect example.
Plenty of sleepers at the guard position
The class of 2022 is full of sleepers as a result of the strong guard play. Perkins and Roy are two of the bigger sleepers, but there are many more in 2022. Bergen Catholic’s guard duo of Julian Brown and Elijah Flournoy are overshadowed by their higher rated teammate, but they shouldn’t be. The talented guards are capable of running an offense and getting to the basket.
David Olaniyi is a true point guard that should help run the Newark East Side to perfection this season. He is not the only Red Raiders guard that is under the radar as Jahzeer Gaskins is a solid perimeter shooter and defender. The class of 2022 has so many talented guards that a couple of them have fallen threw the cracks.
Mehki Johnson has the potential to be the biggest riser
The sophomore class does not have a lot of premier frontcourt players as none have received a college offer yet. The lack of high-end forwards makes it possible for one of them to shoot up the rankings. Johnson of St. Thomas Aquinas has the opportunity to make a big leap up the rankings due to his elite size.
The 6’7 power forward has a burly frame and is a load on the block. He has a soft touch around the basket and gobbles up rebounds. Johnson’s size and touch around the basket makes him the perfect candidate to rise up the 2022 rankings.
Charles Anychie could creep into the top 10
The class of 2022 does not have many ranked forwards. As a result, one of them will move up the rankings as the season progresses. Ranney School’s Anychie has the best opportunity due to being the top ranked non-guard at number 14.
The 6’7 forward is an athletic freak who also excels on the soccer field. He has a soft touch around the basket and is a tremendous shot-blocker. Anychie moves his feet well on the defensive end and is working on his perimeter game. If he can provide the Panthers with consistent scoring, Anychie could be one of the top 10 sophomores in the state.
