Protect the rim, and hold them to one shot. Those task are made much easier with quality big men manning the middle. In this Article PH takes a look at some of the top big men in the state.
Max Allen 6’8 Bishop Gorman 2022 – Allen has large shoes to fill this season. He will man the middle for the 8 time consecutive 4A champs. He is a traditional space eater. Allen isn’t going to wow you with his run and jump ability, however he does a great job of carving out position for rebounds. A national top 100 player his ability to stay out of foul trouble and control the glass will be key for Gorman if they plan on making a National Championship run this season.
Jaylon Lee 6’8 Arbor View 2022 – Lee is a physical big bodied post. A terrific interior defender. Lee does a great job of moving opponents off the block and out of their comfort zone. He runs the floor well, and is good finishing around the rim. Scores mostly in transition and off offensive rebounds. When you throw it directly to him, he has a nice left shoulder jump hook that he likes to go to.
Darnell Washington 6’7 Desert Pines 2020 – Washington is the premier rebounder in the state. A two sports star he is a glass eater supreme. An above average athlete, Washington may be the best end to end floor runner in the state. He gets off the ground well, allowing him to provide rim protection on the defensive end. Offensively he is going to score his buckets in transition and on putbacks.
Joshua Jefferson 6’6 Liberty 2022 – Jefferson is a skilled post with an array of offensive post moves. He has terrific hands, allowing him to snag passes even when surrounded. Jefferson is capable of stepping out and knocking down the occasional 3, however he has a unique ability to put the ball on the floor from the perimeter to set up his post game.
Dennis Cash 6’7 Trinity International 2020 – Cash may be the most athletic big in the state. Gets off the ground and has a quick second jump. A fluid athlete Cash runs the floor well and has decent hands. He’s going to play a ton of pick and roll basketball this season with Top 15 PG Dashien Nix. His ability to catch and finish will be key to the success of Trinity. Still developing his low post game, however he does have a right hand jump hook that he goes to.
Jaxon Kholer 6’8 Coronado 2022 – Kholer is a recent arrival to the state. The transfer from Utah is one of the top Big men in the class of 2022. He has an advanced arsenal of low post moves in his repertoire including jump hooks, up and under’s and step through’s. He also can step out to the perimeter and either knock down open looks, or show the ball raise the defender and drive to the hoop. Kholer will be a fantastic addition to the Nevada Prep scene.
