While the league is smaller this year than it’s been in the past, there was still plenty of talent from all over the 757 and more, and there were plenty of kids who stood out. Here’s a look at seven seniors that impressed me on Wednesday, October 2nd.
Donnell Langford | 6’0” WG | Norcom 2020
Langford has quietly been a very effective scorer for Norcom over the past few seasons, and he put on a show in their first game which was a thrilling win over a good Western Branch group. The senior guard showed a good stroke from deep and the ability to create off the bounce for himself, as he went on a roll late and finished with a game high 30 points, including a game winner from about 30 feet out that I was lucky enough to catch on camera for the Twitter world! He’s a guy who can flat out score the basketball in a number of ways and will light you up from deep if you don’t guard him.
Jose Gonzalez | 6’2” G | Norcom 2020
Gonzalez has bounced around a bit as he was at Norcom as a freshman then had stints at Bishop Sullivan and Woodside before ending up back at Norcom for his senior season. He’s a steady ball handler and playmaker who just knows how to play the game, and he he’s able to play both with the ball and without the ball while being effective. He’s a good finisher with both hands around the basket and he makes other guys on the team better as well.
Andre Bottoms | 6’0” PG | Oscar Smith 2020
Bottoms is a guy I have been watching for a very long time, and I’m very impressed with the way he has matured and grown as a true point guard over the last four years. While he isn’t the most athletic guy he has a good handle and he changes speeds well, he’s able to handle pressure on the offensive end and apply it defensively and he has a great skill set that has improved over time. He was solid as a playmaker and made shots when he needed to, but it was just his poise and leadership that was the most impressive.
Kenard Richardson | 6’3” WG | Life Christian 2020
If I was in a street fight, I would really hope that Richardson was on my side because he’s one of the toughest kids I’ve watched, and even though I’ve been watching this for the past three years he still impresses me with his toughness every time I see him. He’s the type of guy that brings it on both ends every time he’s on the floor, he’s a good finisher through traffic when he gets downhill and he has the killer instinct you can’t teach. He’s been extremely impressive over the past year and a half and is one of the more under recruited kids in the state.
Ikechi Chantilou | 6’4” WF | Life Christian 2020
Chantilou is a welcome addition at LCA after a successful three years at George Wythe, and he brings great athleticism, length and finishing ability on the wing to this group. He’s a slippery guy who can get in the lane and get downhill where he’s an athletic finisher with great body control. He has a ton of potential on the defensive end with his length and activeness, and he’s a good rebounder as well that can start the break and make plays for others as well.
Terry White | 6’0” G | Grafton 2020
One of the most steady guards in the 757, what you see is what you get with White who is not only steady but also is gritty and plays with a great motor. He makes good reads both on and off the basketball, he can create shots or get them within the flow of the offense, he’s well coached and gives great effort on both ends of the floor. He isn’t going to wow you athletically or anything but he can do everything you ask as a coach and will bring it every day.
Jamal Madison | 5’9” PG | Norview 2020
Madison has changed my mind about him over the years and has developed into one of the best floor generals and two way point guards in the area. He’s small but he’s a pest defensively that gets after you and will guard you the length of the floor, he’s a terrific playmaker who can get in the lane and has good vision and passing ability and he can score in bunches from the midrange and from deep. With the talent Norview has this season they should be in the talks as a favorite in the new Class 5, and Madison’s ability to make plays and keep others happy will play a big part in this.
