Continue ReadingThe Basketball Colorado Showcase was this past weekend and if there is one thing that is for certain, that showcase has some new names emerge and hop onto the scene both from far and near. Players went at it in front of college coaches and brought some of their best stuff. Here are the top players from the event that truly stood out most.
Kobe Sanders— Chaparral
This play comes as asterisk*. Some players just have that “IT” factor and Sanders has it. He does a bit of everything and that was on display in the game that he played. Although he did not stay for the whole day he made an impact as the best player at the event. His change of pace separates him, see’s the floor well and he can shoot lights out and he is a leader. He brought his team back from being down by 20 points while still not looking as if he was ball hogging. Another solid outing for him that every coach in the gym was asking about.
Jalen Page—Fairview
Page is bigger and stronger than the other players and that was on display at the showcase as he showed that he is a very skilled big man that can also get on the wing. He showed off his interior scoring and rebounded well, got out on the fast break and also showed off a dunk or two. Good day for him.
Valentinas Ulinas—Overland
Ulinas is new to Colorado and he stood out as a player to know at the 250 expo but was the Basketball Colorado’s best scorer on the day and who I feel won MVP. He did it all. He rebounded, showed off a few 3-pointers, attacked the rim and also got off a dunk which I had my doubts about. He already gets to the rim easier than other players and does not miss free-throws. It was a bit interesting to see him take over point guard duties and would have been nice to see him pass a bit more but when you are scorching hot and not able to be stopped for the day I understood the heat-check moments. Again, MVP day for him.
Jordan Whitaker – Smoky Hill
Whitaker is starting to look more and more like himself these past few weeks as one of the standouts that we had seen early on last season. He soars for rebounds and starts breaks, is difficult to stay in front of, especially on the fast break and is also showing off a bit of range. He is a springy finisher that makes plays happen and had himself quite the day scoring.
Obi Agbim—Rangeview
Agbim had himself maybe the most surprising day as he had the most complete game overall. We have all seen the countless dunks but at the event he was running the offense from the lead guard spot. He seen the floor and hit the right guys, made it difficult for defenders to limit him and was also stopping for mid-range jumpers as well. He scores with either hand and also refuses to get scored on which only builds on his case of being one of the most improved players in the state for this upcoming year. Coaches were raving about his day.
Peyton Westfall—Pine Creek
This was by far the best that I have seen of Westfall and that is saying a ton as he has been having some incredible showings since last season. He is a much improved player. At the event, he shot lights out for the day and scored whenever it is he wanted. He knocked down contested 3-pointers, created off of the dribble and also showed that he can also get it done with the ball in his hands as a point guard. He has an endless motor and is a comfortable scorer that gets it done in a variety of ways. He is an improved play maker that gets others involved as well. Solid day for him.
Jalen Ashley – Rock Canyon
Ashley is a scorer – there is no way around it. He can put the ball in the basket and he did plenty of that at the event. He is a confident shooter, he finishes with either hand and also is a downhill runner that cannot get stopped. He got to the rim as any as anyone at the event and also has good size as a guard.
Lawrence Lucero – Wiley
Lucero came to the event as a player that nobody knew but finished as one of the best players at the entire event and that is saying a ton with the players that was at the event. He literally did a bit of everything. He rebounded over taller defenders, he blocked shots, he scored at ease and he shot the ball extremely well. There was a point in his first game when he went on a 16 point run by himself as he finished with 24 points in the game. He is a natural scorer with good size and playing with the big boys as he comes from a small classification he did not shy away. He was consistent the entire event and made things happen. Not only did he boost his stock a ton but he had one of the best days out of everyone. Lawrence Lucero is a player.
