With that being the case, it’s time to dive into some preview articles for the respective leagues. For this article, we’ll look at some of the newcomers to watch in the Baltimore County Public School conferences.
Darrius Tilghman | 6’3 | Parkville ’21
The news just broke yesterday that Tilghman would officially enroll in Parkville. Last season he spent his sophomore season at City following an impressive freshman campaign at Calvert Hall. The 6-foot-3 lefty is looking to find a home with the Knights that welcome a slew of other transfers. Together and considering the quality returners, they should be a huge threat for the Baltimore County championship. Tilghman is a player that can move the needle for any team and with Parkville already becoming a formidable opponent, the addition of Tilghman moves them into solid position. Tilghman brings another scorer and play maker to the backcourt alongside 2020 point guard John Godinez.
Chandler Johnson | 6’0 | Franklin ’20
Johnson is an impact addition for the Indians a year after appearing in the county title game. The Mount St. Joseph transfer brings a scoring presence as a combo guard and can fill it up quickly. He’s a solid competitor defensively and should be a county standout immediately. He and 2020 guard Ben Murphy will form quite the dynamic duo in the county and should keep the Indians around the top of the standings, similar to where they were last season.
Khalil Dukes | 6’2 | Parkville ’20
Dukes is a transfer from Mt. Carmel that will provide toughness, defense and a presence as a slasher for the Knights. His athleticism helps make him a versatile defender, being able to guard positions 1-4 competently in county play. Offensively, he’ll be most effective in transition filling the lanes and using his athleticism to finish around the rim. Having a guy like Dukes defensively makes things easier schematically to help save other players’ energy for the offensive end.
Malik Scipio | 6’2 | Parkville ’21
Scipio is another shot maker and play maker that will be suiting up for the Knights. He plays with a downhill attack and with a good, strong frame, uses it to his advantage bullying his way to the paint. With all of the impact additions, Scipio will be leaned on as being versatile defensively, being another option on the floor to spark a fast break and operate in ball screens.
Caron Smith | 6’1 | Loch Raven ’23
Smith is likely the most prolific scorer as a freshman in the county that will be worth watching. The 6-foot-1 guard can get it going quickly from deep and is a threat to pour in 20+ points every time he steps on the floor. There will be growing pains as expected from a freshman, but he should have the green light as a scorer for Loch Raven, meaning there should be plenty of impressive scoring outings for Smith in 2019-20.
Detwan Montague | 6’7 | Milford Mill ’21
Montague is a St. Frances transfer who can step in and be arguably the best big man in the county. He was limited to a role off the bench for the Panthers his first two seasons, but will play heavy minutes going forward for the Millers. Montague is an active rebounder, shot-blocker and scorer on the block with his back to the basket.
Sammy Scott | 5’7 | Milford Mill ’22
Scott is a transfer from City that brings a distributor to the Milford Mill lineup. Despite being small, Scott plays extremely hard and tough on both ends. Offensively, he’s a big addition because it allows 2020 combo guard Jermaine Goodwyn to slide off the ball and take on the role of being a primary scorer. Scott is a good facilitator that can handle pressure and assure the Millers will get into their desired sets successfully.
O’Meech Wilson | 6’5 | Milford Mill ’21
Wilson is a North County transfer that brings size and athleticism to the wing spot for the Millers. Wilson should be an immediate impact in the starting lineup. It gives them a versatile defender on the perimeter that can also guard the forwards who are more mobile. Wilson and Montague will be double-double threats night in and night out for the new look Millers who will give everyone fits in county play.
Stephon Marcano | 6’1 | New Town ’20
Marcano is a 6-foot-1 guard who can score it efficiently from all three levels. He equips the Titans with another reliable option alongside 2020 guard Martaz Robinson. New Town lost a lot of talent in the scoring department with a large group of seniors graduating and a key transfer leaving the school, so having Marcano to fill a bit of that void will be critical.
