NBA Stylistic Comparison: 1993 Warriors Tim Hardaway
Ashton Munson was a pleasant surprise for the event. Munson’s handle made him especially elusive. Generally, smaller, younger players do poorly against their older opponents at events like this. Ashton overwhelmed those bigger, older, more physically mature players with a wonderful capacity for dribbling. The prowess of Munson showed up in the halfcourt as he sliced up guards. To be fair, most of the backcourts lacked cohesiveness because they met mere hours earlier. Munson took advantage of this unfamiliarty by splitting the two guards via the dribble.
Areas for Improvement
Ashton is just an ok shooter from deep. He is a solid free throw shooter and the form is fine. He just needs to put work in extending the range.
Quickness and handle are going to be Munson’s bankable qualities. He will benefit from improving upon his already powerful upper body. The best small guards are effective in the lane only if they can handle some severe contact. He will easily get into those dangerous zones. Can he finish after some harm? That requires him to keep lifting, stretching, etc.
The Foundation
Prior to entering high school, as Ashton is currently an eighth grader, Munson revealed a 2-foot vertical leap. This should really excite both Munson and his supporters. There are at least a couple years of physical maturity ahead of the 2024 point guard.
For what it is worth, Ashton Munson’s shoe size measured size 10. His hands are average adult male size (7.5″ x 9.0″) and his height is currently 5’4 1/2″.
Willing passer with a little flash. His no-look pass in the All-Star Game hit the intended recipient right in the shooting pocket.
Cares about defense. Really quick feet (11.16 lane agility) that he uses wonderfully to contain dribblers. During the PrepHoopsTN Fall Combine, Ashton Munson slide his feet very well. He also showed off a unique strategy by pouncing here and there. The opposing guard might scan the floor, considering the next course of action, and Ashton would swiftly shuffle his feet towards the ball-handler. Before the dribbler could react, Munson was upon him, like a spider creeping into unexpecting player’s living room.
Tyner Academy has a good one in their program.
