So far, I have seen a handful of freshmen, and each player I have seen has a chance to play varsity minutes.
As of right now, the 2023 class is showing a lot of promise and could be a deep class if everyone reaches their full potential.
Here are the freshmen to watch in 2019:
Regale Moore, Bartlett: Moore is already 6-foot-1 and can push the basketball up the floor. He drives to the basket and doesn’t mind creating contact. Moore’s physicality should have him in the rotation for the Panthers.
EJ Smith, Arlington: Smith’s skill set is built for him to be a combo guard. Since he’s left-handed, Smith is going to be tough to defend. He’s a solid shooter, and he has great court vision to be a freshman. Smith should see minutes on varsity.
Andre Watson, Arlington: Watson is one of the smallest guards in his class, but he looks to be one of the best shooters in the 2023 class. At 5-8, Watson can create space to get a shot off. That’s what he needs to be able to do in Class AAA.
Anthony Medlock, Arlington: Medlock is one of the biggest, physical guards in the 2023 class. At 6-3, Medlock loves to drive to the basket. He can score from the perimeter as well. First year head coach Maurice Miller has a talented wing to go along with the rest of the freshman class.
Chris Shields, Ridgeway: Will head coach Wes Henning play Shields on varsity? Will he dress out on varsity? These are questions I can’t answer right now, so it will be interesting to see what happens to Shields in his freshman season. From an offensive standpoint, Shields is one of the most gifted guards in the 2023 class. He has the skillset to play in Class AAA.
AJ Dillworth, Lausanne: Dillworth is very physical and athletic. One numerous occasions, Lynx head coach Marvis Davis mentioned that Dillworth is going to play on varsity in 2019. Dillworth is only 5-10, but his physicality will make him one of the top young guards in Division II Class A before the end of the season.
Fred Deere, Bartlett: Deere is another guard Panthers head coach Dion Real could play right away in 2019. At 6-2, Deere is dangerous when he’s downhill. He plays hard on both ends of the floor. Deere needs to find consistency on his jump shot.
Kaden Smith, Briarcrest: When I went to see the Saints in open gym last week, head coach John Harrington told me how special Smith can be as a freshman. He’s a left-handed point guard that has the scoring abilities to play off the ball. He’s already 6-1 and skilled enough to log in minutes on varsity. Smith gives Briarcrest depth this season plus a bright future.
Jordan Frison, Overton: The 5-7 guard can shoot the 3 ball. Frison has nice ball handles early on in his high school basketball career. First year head coach Shelvie Rose mentioned that the freshman will play on varsity in 2019.
