I took in five games on Tuesday night and here is a look at the players who stood out.
Naples has bought in players
The 2021 duo of 6’5″ guard Tony Green and 6’6″ guard James Cone is a good one for Naples (see video at the end of the story). Green is a freakish athlete, who is playing with more of a motor and purpose as of late. He had a few huge dunks which came off cuts to the rack. Green is someone who deserves way more attention from college programs. As for Cone, he is improving as an attacker and has a decisiveness in his game. He is stronger in his legs and arms and is being more aggressive which is great to see.
Lehigh has an athletic pair
The typically athletic Lehigh squad has two core 2020 kids that are fine players in 6’4″ guard/forward Darron Humphrey and 6’1″ guard Quinton Desamours. Humphrey is a gifted shooter, long athlete who can mix it up on both ends as a talented defender and a finisher. As for Desamours, he is a quick and agile guard who loves to mix it up in transition and get everyone around him involved.
Canterbury has a nice trio in place
The trio of 2021 5’10” guard Alan Cedeno, 2021 6’3″ guard Chase Garrett and 2020 6’7″ forward Jovan Kojic is going to do plenty of damage for Canterbury this season. Cedeno is a leader and a talented ballhandler and surefire 3-point shooter. He left midway through the opening game against Riverdale due to a dislocated finger. Garrett came in and took over as the main point man with Cedeno out and he had big second half performances after slowing slow against both Riverdale and Lehigh. He is a strong kid who thrives as an attacker. The most impressive piece for the Cougars was Kojic, the long Serbian prospect has great instincts, a good jumper and very fluid feet to let him get to the rack and finish.
Riverdale has a gifted duo
2021 6’8″ forward Tyrone Baker made his name known this summer a bit playing for Team Parsons SWFL. He is a long and raw prospect who is talented as a shot blocker and a guy who cleans up misses and boards inside. He needs to add muscle and work on his post moves, but his arms and natural ability are guiding him now. As for 2020 6’6″ guard Jadrian “Bam” Tracey, the Fort Myers native returns to Riverdale after playing at Oldsmar Christian a season ago. This was his first game back with Riverdale after healing up from an ankle injury and he had some really good moments as a high IQ passer and shooter. Tracey will flourish as he gets back in the gym on a daily basis.
Jones is improving for Dunbar
2021 6′ Dunbar guard Caleb Jones is stronger, faster and overall better heading into his junior season. A highly intelligent leader and passer, he was crashing the boards often and proved to be a versatile slasher. Jones has a high ceiling and should continue to improve for the Tigers.
Community School has a riser in Vance
At 6’6″, 2021 Community School forward Ryker Vance has become more aggressive and active near the rim. He was fighting for tips and boards all night long and his confidence is growing daily. Vance is a long body who can shoot the ball well, but now his game is expanding and I think his true talents are showing for the best.
Charles is a fine athlete for Immokalee
The most gifted basketball player for Immokalee is 2022 6’2” guard Kevin Charles. A super athletic kid, he was dunking with ease in transition and he goes hard to the paint on almost every 1-on-1 opportunity. Look for Charles to be the top player to watch for this Braves group this season.
Daughtery leads South Fort Myers
For a young South Fort Myers team, 2021 5’9″ guard Cade Daughtery has the consistent shooting and natural leadership that is needed for this group. He is an undersized but quick and mature ballhandler who controls the floor. Daughtery should be a double digit scorer this season.
