Moving On: The Eagles only had three seniors on the team last year – Riley Burger, Mitch Burton, and Eric Krieger – a group that combined for 24 of their 58 points a game. Krieger was the team’s leading scorer at 16 a game last year, and the senior threesome was part of the main group of six. These players will be missed, but the new group should flip that 13-16 record around (or more) even though they will be young.
Returning Starters: Junior Devin Burger, junior DJ Akpati, and senior Carson Wolla started the games we looked at before taking to the web to write about the Eagles. We also noticed that junior Carter Weierke started some games as well. Six-foot-6 Devin Burger is the team’s leading returning scorer at 12.6 points and the skilled forward continues to show scholarship level ability. Akpati scored nine a game as a sophomore and is coming off a great 16u year with the Minnesota Comets. The 6-foot-3 Wolla is a 215 pound football prospect that is willing to do the dirty work for a team.
Reserves Playing a Bigger Role: Carter Weierke is a 6-foot-3, 180 pound three sport athlete that plays football, basketball, and baseball. Carter scored a couple baskets a game as a sophomore including shots made at the arc and he’s a consistent worker a coach can depend on. The other returning reserve for the Eagles is junior Chasen Livingston who joined Weierke in scoring 2-3 times a game. Livingston, Weirke, Burger, and Akpati make up an experienced junior class.
Potentials from the JV: Will there be another senior in the class with Carson? If so they will come from the junior varsity. Guards Tyler Nygren and Ebenezer Araya as well as forward Caden Wolla and Isaiah Traufler all played on that JV last year. There will only be a few spots available and all these potential seniors will have to fight fellow 18-19 JV teammates RJ Spencer (sophomore), Max Hofshulte-Beck (junior), Kristoff Kowalkowski (junior), and Sam Fretheim (Junior) for that time. Spencer, Hofshulte-Beck, and Fretheim all saw a bit of varsity time last year but now want a bigger role.
New to Town: Taison Chatman, CJ O’Hara, and Tommy Humphries will all be freshmen playing for varsity basketball for the Eagles this year. O’Hara and Chatman were in the Park Center program a year ago playing junior varsity basketball. They, along with Humphries, are all top ten level players in the 2023 class with Chatman being the top freshmen in the state of Minnesota. All three are likely to play a ton for the Eagles with Taison being a top scoring option.
