Today, we take a look at some of the top athletic and scoring wings and guards from across the state, looking at guys who use their athleticism to score or make plays on both ends. Here’s seven seniors as we take a look at part one.
Tymu Chenery | 6’5” | Episcopal 2020
The Quinnipiac commit has come a long way since he transferred to Episcopal his sophomore season and his ability to be a two way impact player at the next level should bold well for him moving forward. He checks all the boxes physically outside of strength with good length and natural athleticism, he thrives in transition as a scorer and while he’s a streaky shooter he will make some shots to get him going and allow him to attack closeouts and get to the rim.
Chaunce Jenkins | 6’3” | Menchville 2020
A late bloomer who is starting to see division one interest come his way, Jenkins has a blend of size, athleticism and a high motor to go along with a budding skill set on the offensive end. He’s a pretty consistent guy who gets after it on both ends, can make shots from all three levels and is a very good rebounder for his position as well. He’s planning a visit to VMI this weekend and if they offer that will be his third division one offer and fifth overall since the summer started.
Justin Fatherly | 6’3” | Nansemond River 2020
An under the radar kid in the 757 who brings it every night, Fatherly is a slashing wing with good athleticism and finishing ability in traffic. He excels in transition where he can get downhill and finish, he rebounds on both ends of the court and can start the break and he’s able to run the pick-and-roll and turn the corner as well. He’s a guy scholarship programs should be looking at if he isn’t already on their radar.
Zyrail Mitchell | 6’2” | Lake Taylor 2020
A naturally gifted scoring guard that can play either backcourt position, Mitchell is able to take over games by himself and scores the basketball well in isolation situations. He’s a streaky guy but he has the whole repertoire on the offensive end including three level scoring ability off the bounce, good athleticism at the rim as a finisher and he gets to the line often and converts at a high rate. It’s easy to label him as a combo guard because he’s a score first guy but he’s capable of being the primary ball handler against pressure as well.
Ikechi Chantilou | 6’3” | Life Christian 2020
A guy who sometimes gets forgotten among the best in Richmond, Chantilou had a great first three years at George Wythe and will join the reigning VISAA D3 Champions to give them a two way guy with natural ability and athleticism. While he isn’t the best shooter from deep, Chantilou is a slippery wing who can probe the defense off the bounce and get to the cup where he has great body control and finishing ability with both hands at and above the rim. His length and bounce makes him a versatile defender as well and when he plays with a motor he’s very productive on both ends.
Zy’Ever Wingfield | 6’2” | Henrico 2020
Wingfield had a breakout season for Highland Springs last year and will be a welcome addition to a Henrico team that will be one of the top sleepers in Class 5 this season. Wingfield brings a lot of tenacity and toughness to the group on both ends, he’s a natural athlete who knows how to use it on both ends of the floor and he’s an underrated playmaker with the ball in his hands. He can score in bunches when he gets it going but it’s the impact he has in other ways that really stands out.
Aviwe Mahlong | 6’2” | Eastern Mennonite 2020
The native of South Africa had a big breakout season for EMHS in his first year in the states as he helped them make a run to the VISAA D3 State Championship, and he’s a sleeper in the 540 that some coach is going to get a steal with. He plays all over the court for them which makes some believe he’s a big, but his skill set and ability to guard on the perimeter says otherwise. He’s an above average shooter who can make shots when open, he’s a good rebounder and tenacious defender and he’s a natural athlete who can play above the rim as well.
