Transfers take place every year and it this has been the case for years and years. For more on that, see my previous article. Year after year there is one consistency and that is that the rich get richer, or stay rich, however you want to look at it. There will be a handful of further transfer updates throughout the Fall, but there is a major focus on Garfield and Federal Way “staying rich” in this case.
Federal Way graduated its McDonald’s All American Jaden McDaniels, but a solid group was expected to return with Jaylen Williams, Tari Eason and Bradley Graham. Garfield expected to be much stronger this year, returning a very young core and adding one of the state’s top freshman, Jaylin Stewart. Some of the above expectations remain true, but there is still a lot of change involved with these two schools.
Starting with the biggest star, Tari Eason will be playing for Garfield High School for his second round with the program. Tari spent his freshman and sophomore years at Garfield, then transferred to Federal Way for his junior year and is now back at Garfield for his senior season. Tari has solidified himself as a top 100 player nationally and automatically turns the Bulldogs into a 3A state title contender, along with the return of Head Coach Brandon Roy. There are rumors of another big transfer heading to Garfield, but it has not been confirmed quite yet. More on that at a later time.
Federal Way will be losing its two best players from a year ago, but they return their starting backcourt in Bradley Graham and Jaylen Williams. Incoming transfers include Stadium’s former standout point guard Jaden Call, shooting guard Ja’Von Ervin via Lakes, D1 prospect Peter Erickson, a three year starter for Enumclaw and Curtis’ starting forward, Jared Franklin. They also have two other transfers that are expected to make some type of an impact. Federal Way will be very strong at the guard and forward positions. How they mesh and play together will determine how good they can truly be. Talent wise, they will be one of the top 4A teams in Washington.
The landscape of 4A and 3A basketball definitely changes with multiple players moving to traditional powerhouses. The question of eligibility is up in the air, but players rarely seem to have issues gaining eligibility to play. I will be sure to keep everyone up to date as further details become available.
