202 high school prospects (2020-2023) competed at a high level at Daytona Mainland where 20 plus college coaches, 15 plus media companies and a plethora of parents and family taking in the action.
We will have coverage all week long about the event.
Here is a look at my favorite shooters from Sunday.
Jordan Hillmon (East Lake)
Any college that needs a pure shooter needs to look no further than 2020 5’10” East Lake guard Jordan Hillmon. He will make you pay if you leave him open and he creates his own shot time and time again. Hillmon was hitting at a high clip on Sunday including a game in which I saw him bury three 3’s in a row. He’s in for a masterful senior season.
Rodney Bryant (Mount Dora Christian)
Every time I watch 2021 6′ Mount Dora Christian guard Rodney “RJ” Bryant play, I always come away impressed. He is a gifted shooter and a confident one at that. Bryant likes to take chances as a jump shooter and his form and scoring prowess makes it worth the risk. He was on fire at times in Daytona.
Dean Gabrelcik (East Lake)
Alongside Hillmon at East Lake, 2021 6’4″ guard Dean Gabrelcik is someone that college coaches are already tracking closely. He’s got nice size, can hit the mid-range, is an active player and has proven to be a dangerous shooter. In Daytona, he was hitting shots left and right and clearly has been in the gym working this summer.
Gabriel Sharp (Tampa Prep)
Just starting to come into his own entering a crucial senior season, 2020 6’3″ Tampa Prep guard Gabriel Sharp has been shooting the ball with ease all summer long. Whether it was with Skills Center Elite, Tampa Prep summer league ball or at the Top 250 Expo last weekend, you get consistent scoring from him. Sharp is going to be a top option for the Terrapins this season and will be asked to score often.
Markel Allums (Oakleaf)
2021 6’4″ Oakleaf guard Markel Allums might be one of the most underrated juniors in the entire state. This summer for Nike Team Wildcats he was the clear cut leader playing up on the 17U group. He is a long body who is a consistent shooter and a very poised player. He stood out throughout the showcase.
Jaden Golston (Windermere)
A 3-year attendee at the Prep Hoops Top 250 it is so much fun watching a kid grow in both skill and height over the years. 2021 6’4″ guard Jaden Golston made the move over to Windermere from Montverde. He is still a very talented outside shooter and his added length has given him more of an advantage moving forward.
Gyasi Powell (Bishop Snyder)
At Bishop Snyder, 2020 6’2″ guard Gyasi Powell is in for a key role as a senior. He was really good pushing the ball on the break at the Expo and it helped others find openings. Powell’s best attribute is his jumper whether it came from the mid-range or from deep, he can really stroke it.
Alain Kalisa (Riverview)
Sharpshooting was an asset for 2020 5’10” Riverview guard Alain Kalisa last season on a team packed with talented athletes. He will have that luxury again in terms of being open more often than not. However, Kalisa isn’t just a beneficiary of the players around him, he creates lanes for himself and shots that aren’t normally there. He simply plays basketball the right way and his steady jumper proves it.
Extra Note: Suarez and Slater hold their own
A pair of players from Tohopekaliga head into Year 2 in the program. 2021 6’4″ guard/forward Jonathan Suarez and 2021 6′ guard Jackson Slater were able to make the most of their Expo appearance. Suarez does a little bit of everything down low on both ends of the floor while Slater is a talented attacker and quick-twitch shooter.
