There is a solid list of players that have confirmed that they will be in attendance which has us at Prep Hoops Colorado ready to see some new players jump onto the scene, already ranked and known players solidify their spots and others make a claim. Here, I focus on seven players from the 2020 class that has plenty to prove and a big weekend will have their stocks boosting.
DJ Wilson – Gateway
This showcase for Wilson is about showing that he is better than the last year indicates and getting out there and showing it off in front of others. He is a player that has been on varsity for now going on four years and this will be his most important season as there was a bit of a drop off for him despite there being more positivity and winning surrounding that team. He put up 6.2 points and 6.0 rebounds a game but he is better than those stats showed. Wilson is still one of the strongest players in the state and he will have to use that strength to create some mismatches on the low block. He has to get a few more go-to moves in his arsenal and step up to the challenge against some of the better players in the state, here is his opportunity,
Keyshawn Matlbia – Fountain Fort Carson
Maltbia is one of those players that just gets it. The few times I have seen him he has been completely dominant and it honestly does not matter the competition. He is an aggressive offensive player that can essentially score whenever it is he wants, he excels in iso situations and he is a fierce competitior that is going to go at every single player that jumps out in front of him. Maltbia is a leader and makes others around him and it is a shame that he is not getting more attention heading into a big senior season as he is one of the most entertaining players in the state that is capable of going to get his own and also fitting a system. He is a must-watch player for the weekend.
Cameron Le Van – Legend
Le Van is jumping up the rankings list and also getting some attention as he is a prospect that can absolutely go. He is very difficult to guard because he has great vision, can finish at the rim at either hand after penetrating the defense and also can shoot lights out. What I enjoy about Le Van is his ability to stay even keeled on the court at all times and also his unselfishness. He makes the right play. What I want to see at the showcase is him use all that we have been seeing in the offseason and putting it into game time situations. The step-backs, the dribble combos and willingness to go at the man in front of him for multiple plays at a time. He can pass and shoot but can he take over in games? I would like to see on Sunday.
Micah Lamberth – Classical Academy
Lamberth is a player that I did not know much about before this summer but after seeing him play a few times, he is an absolute ball player that we just have not had the luxury of seeing often. He can go. Lamberth is a difficult player to guard as he is very versatile. He can score, rebound and pass and has the size to create mismatches at a moments notice. Last season for the Classical Academy he was able to put up an impressive 12.4 points and 6.4 rebounds a game but what really stood out was him also being a combo-guard that plays out on the wing that put up 4.5 assists as well with size. Lamberth plays under control and is able to take over at moments, I am excited to see him continue to put it together as I think he is a fun player to watch that is up for a HUGE year.
Taylor Harris – Pueblo West
There is no secret that Harris is one of my favorite players to watch. He is unselfish, he is a competitor, he scores when he wants, he is versatile and he is very smart. I enjoy watching players that are out on the court playing hard and having fun and I see that thrill every single time I watch him play. Harris is one of the few players in the state that I feel is capable of going for a triple-double. He plays well off of the ball, he crashes the board, defends as well as score in the open court. He is a consistent player that has many things that he does well and should be on more radars. I expect him to turn a few heads at the event as he is a guard who has plenty to prove.
Trevor Baskin – Pomona
Baskin is one of the best big men in the state and this was the event that first got him some attention. He jumped onto the scene and we gave the prediction that he would have an incredible junior season and that is just what he did as he was a double-double machine for the year. For his size he has plenty of intangibles that translates to him playing at the next level. He can shoot with soft touch around the rim, he is a back to the basket player, a smart rebounded with great reflexes and he attacks mismatches. What stands out most about Baskin is his ability to read the defense. He takes what the defense gives him and either will score at ease or passes off to the open man. Baskin is a next level player that will make a school happy at the next level. He jumped up the rankings and will be looking to boost his stock this weekend as well.
Kedarian Maul – Pine Creek
We have not seen him play in person so we are excited to have him at our event to showcase what he has. Looking at footage of his game it appears that he is a bruising big man with a high ceiling that knows his role. He does not try and step out and do things that he is not comfortable doing and he makes it difficult down on the block. Last season he was able to put up 6.5 points and 7.5 rebounds a game while only playing half of the season. I would like to see if that translates with some of the better players in the state surrounding him and see if he can keep up that kind of production to get onto our radar.
