There are four prospects who are receiving significant offers and interest at the high-major level heading into the fall. All four are from the Chicago area, but the depth at the point guard position is shown throughout the state. In total there are six point guard/combo guards in the top 10 overall. Tremendous depth and star power at the top of this class.
There is a quality group of mid-major and low-major targets for schools to pursue along with an array of D2 caliber players that can make an immediate impact at that level. Time do dive into the best of the best at the point guard and combo guard spots in the 2020 class.
DJ Steward (Whitney Young)
Travel Team: Meansteets
Current Ranking: #1
Steward had a monster July with Meanstreets at the Peach Jam. He boosted his stock nationally and on the recruiting trail landing offers from an array of Blue Blood programs including Duke and North Carolina. What he brings to the table is a smooth scoring combo guard that can get buckets from all three levels. His strength is his lethal pull up jump shot which he knocks down from all over the floor.
Adam Miller (Morgan Park)
Travel Team: Mac Irvin Fire
Current Ranking: #2
Miller is one of the most explosive point guards in the Midwest. He has size and explosiveness with the ball in his hands. His defining game of the summer was at the Fantastic 40 where he dropped 53 points including draining 13 threes. He is at his best when aggressive getting downhill off the bounce with his elite burst.
Ahron Ulis (Marian Catholic)
Travel Team: Meanstreets
Current Ranking: #6
Ulis has already committed to Iowa. The future Hawkeyes point guard is a rock solid lead guard that has a nice combination of distribution and scoring. Ulis has continually progressed throughout his career with Marian Catholic in all areas of his game. Consistent production out of this guard!
Marcus Watson (Morgan Park)
Travel Team: Morgan Park
Current Ranking: #8
Watson took a huge step forward with his play this spring for the Mac Irvin Fire. Led the Nike EYBL in assists while running the show for the Fire. Watson is a jet quick lefty that has the ball on a string. Settled into his role as a distributor first and foremost on a team that was loaded with scoring weapons and his recruitment took off because of it!
Aquan Smart (Niles North)
Travel Team: Pure Prep/Young & Reckless
Current Ranking: #9
Smart is an athletic combo guard that has seen his stock soar over the last few months. He opened our eyes in the spring and that continued with a huge June and July. What you have to like about this combo is his athleticism and burst off the bounce. Can play both on and off the ball. Attacks downhill with force!
Tyler Beard (Whitney Young)
Travel Team: Brad Beal Elite
Current Ranking: #10
Beard closed out July with a nice showing for Brad Beal Elite. He had his moments for Whitney Young in June as well. He did well playing on the ball using his strength and utilizing his ball handling getting dribble penetration in the lane for scores and dishes.
Ray’Sean Taylor (Collinsville)
Travel Team: Gateway Illinois
Current Ranking: #16
Taylor is one of the best prospects from the southern part of the state. The Collinsville standout is a scoring point guard that has a burst with the ball in his hands. Consistently wins off the dribble and is a capable shooter out to three pulling up. Solid passer that does a nice job of getting his teammates involved.
Connor Dillon (Peoria Notre Dame)
Travel Team: Illinois Irish
Current Ranking: #30
Dillon is a sleeper prospect in the 2020 class that not many are talking about. We think a low-major would be wise to take a long and hard look at him. Lefty combo guard that can really shoot it and is a plus athlete that explodes at the rim. Feel for the game as a passer.
Beau Frericks (Cary Grove)
Travel Team: Team RWA
Current Ranking: #31
Frericks is the premier shooter in the state from the point guard spot. Elite sniper displayed his shooting prowess all spring and summer for RWA. Was consistent event in and event out.
Donovan Newby (Bloom)
Travel Team: Illinois Wolves
Current Ranking: #34
Newby isn’t going to wow you with his athleticism or do anything spectacular, but this kid is just a rock solid leader at the point. High basketball IQ, makes sound decisions, hits open shots, and rebounds great for his position.
Luke Scheffers (St. Charles North)
Travel Team: Fundamental U
Current Ranking: #41
Scheffers is an excellent lead guard working in the pick and roll. He understands how to use ball screens and makes reads off of them to either shoot or dish. High IQ playmaker.
Davis Walker (Home School)
Travel Team: Team RWA
Current Ranking: #42
Thicker point guard that made the transition to playing more on the ball this summer. He has always been an adequate three point shooter and that continued on the circuit.
Taaj Davis (Aurora Christian)
Travel Team: HIT
Current Ranking: #49
Davis is a slick lefty point guard that is effective as both a scorer and passer. He is at his best using his handles to create along with a sweet pull up game that stretches out to three.
