This was a good opportunity for high schools to get some early team play together. Here are some 2020 prospects who caught my attention this past Saturday.
A.J McGee 6’0 2020 Grant Union High School (Sacramento Ca)
I’ve had the opportunity to watch A.J multiple times during the summer with his grassroots team. Saturday he was my top performer, playing with his high school team I see the tools of a solid player. He has command of the offense, which means he’s got the ball in his hands to either create his own shot or find teammates. His ability to penetrate has never been in question. He knocked down 3’s and mid range shots with some consistency, he’s a good pick n roll guard, and showed quality leadership on a good team.
Maxton Phillips 6’5 2020 Clovis West (Fresno Ca)
An all around solid performance from this long wiry prospect. He’s a good finisher around the basket, he’s got that quick twitch which enables him to get his hands on a lot of balls first around the rim, and lots of put backs. His handles are good, he can grab the rebound, start the break, and makes the right decision. A good floor runner and always headed towards the basket, he will dunk on you. Can guard multiple positions, and changes shots with his long reach.
Kendall Taylor 6’4 2020 Capital Christian (Sacramento Ca)
This prospect operates under the radar with this good team of underclassmen. He’s undersized for a big, but he’s got a solid body and very active in the paint. He had several nice finishing moves including that baseline spin move and taking it strong to the basket. He can hit the mid range. He’s strong and can guard taller players in the post area.
Donat Rexhepi 6’5 2020 Salesian
Calm demeanor, made good use of the ball fake with drives from the wings, attacks the basket under control and with strength. A good shooter from the 3pt area. At 6’5 handles full court ball pressure from pesky guards. Smart prospect makes good decisions with the ball and moves well without the ball. A new comer a prospect for me to keep an eye on.
Lejuan Watts 6’2 2020, Clovis West (Fresno Ca)
A solid combo lefty guard who can cause problems for any defender. He brings confidence with his ability to attack the basket and finish from different angles, his mid range shot goes in, and he hit several 3 pt shots when needed down the stretch. Probably more of a one guard but plays the 2 spot for this team.
Evan Johnson 6’4 2020 Capital Christian (Sacramento Ca)
An Athletic wing prospect you have to account for. He’s a good floor runner and finishes multiple ways in the open court including the dunk. In the half court he moves well without the ball, he had several backdoor finishes. He’s a good on ball defender who can guard more than one position.
