Robinson does all this while defending the top scorer on the other team. In this article, we will highlight other all-around players like Robinson. They are some of the best of the best and can do it on both ends of the floor.
Hobert Grayson / 6’5″ / 2020 / East Ascension High
Grayson (#9 rated player in Prep Hoops) is the epitome of an all-around player. When he plays with his school, he leads in almost all offensive categories. Grayson is like a prep version of Lamar Odom when he rebounds the ball and takes it up the court. Teams usually cannot stop him from going to the hole. Even when he misses a shot, he is the initial person to get the rebound. On defense, he defends either the top scorer or the best post player the opposition has. Grayson got a little break this summer from all those duties playing with Louisiana Elite. There were glimpses of his total game sprinkled throughout the grassroots season however. Look for Grayson to continue this style of play as he leads the Spartans during his senior season. He will definitely be one of the all-around preps filling the stat sheet.
Derrick Tezeno Derrick Tezeno 6'5" | SF North Central | 2021 State LA / 6’5″ / 2021 / North Central High (pictured above)
Tezeno is one of the best players in Louisiana. He already has a championship Most Outstanding Player from the 2019 1A Finals to go along with other all district credentials. So going into his junior year, he is already very accomplished. At the elite camp at Northwestern State, Tezeno showed what makes him an all-around player. Running with teammates Daniel Ortiz Daniel Ortiz 6'1" | CG Calvary Baptist | 2021 State LA (Southwood) and Corey Dunning Corey Dunning 6'7" | C Lafayette | 2020 State LA (Lafayette), Tezeno showed flashes of his game. He attacked from the wing, rebounded in traffic, and pushed the ball in the open floor. Tezeno switched to defend small guards and big men also. He can play four offensive positions (if you need a small ball stretch 4) and defend four positions. All-around player fits his skill set. North Central hopes he continues playing this way as they try to repeat as state champions this season.
Decari Markray Decari Markray 6'3" | CG Doyline | 2020 State LA / 6’5″ / 2020 / Doyline High
Markray is another player who showed off his multi-faceted skill set at the Northwestern State elite camp. Markray has to play a bit of everything at class B Doyline. So when he was on the floor at the elite camp, no position is unfamiliar to him. Markray is athletic enough to guard four positions on the prep level and it showed in the different people he guarded during the day. On offense, he can step out and hit a mid-range jumper, post up on the block, or drive to the basket. Markray seems to read the game and fill the need his team needs at that time. Going into his senior season, if he can continue to show this versatility, college teams (at multiple levels) should be interested in bringing him into their program.
Delatrion Moton Delatrion Moton 6'4" | CG Woodlawn-Shreve | 2021 State LA / 6’4″ / 2021 / Woodlawn High (Shreveport)
No matter where the Knights played this past summer, there was one player who involved in over 90% of the plays. That player was Delatrion Moton Delatrion Moton 6'4" | CG Woodlawn-Shreve | 2021 State LA . He played big for Woodlawn all summer long. Whether it was a big rebound needed or a bucket scored, Moton more times than not made it. During the Bossier summer league (vs Bossier) and the Louisiana Tech team camp (vs Ouachita), he made key plays to either tie the game or to take the lead. He is a three level scorer and defends three positions which makes his versatility essential. This is why he plays a lot of minutes. Look for Moton to be the overwhelming leader for Woodlawn this season as they make another push for Marsh Madness in class 4A.
Jakemin Abney Jakemin Abney 6'3" | CG Simsboro | 2020 State LA / 6’4″ / 2020 / Simsboro High
Abney has been one of the best players in class B the past two years and his most outstanding player award from the 2019 championship final solidfied that. This summer, he was able to handle the rock and play off the block more with the Tigers and his grassroots team. What resulted was Abney showing others he was capable of scoring on all three levels. His work rebounding and scoring around the basket is his bread and butter. When Abney got a chance to slide to the wing, like he did at the elite camp in Natchitoches, his play was next level. He has a lightening quick first step and has nice elevation to the rim. Abney athleticism translates on defense also because he guards five positions on the class B level and legitimately can defend three against most teams. Abney’s all around game is definitely next level.
The all around players in this article are some of the better players in the state. We will see how they, and their teams, will progress as all divisions begin practices on October 14th.
