Some of the teams that participated in Week 1 were St Bernard, Venice, Brentwood, Culver City, Calabasas, Beverly Hills, El Segundo, Compton, Gardena, Crossroads, Cathedral, and Mira Coasta. Here’s a look at some of the top standouts from Week 1 of St. Bernard’s fall league.
1. Zach Brooker – Calabasas 2020
Brooker is finishing his high school career at Calabasas after having transferred from Sierra Canyon. With a bigger role at Calabasas, it’ll be interesting to see how he expands his game. Although he’s probably more of an off guard, he can handle the ball and run the offense at times. He has good court vision and can create good shots for his teammates. He has a quick first step and can slash to the rim. Good shooter who can create good looks off the dribble.
2. Nick Bowden – St Bernard 2020
Bowden has probably been one of the biggest stock risers since the summer after his play with Los Angeles Elite. He’s an excellent shooter both from midrange and from the three-point line. All he needs is a little bit of daylight and he’s letting it fly. He’s good at creating separation from his defender and getting his shot off. Only needs a couple of dribbles to get where he wants to go on the court. A very strong guard who can also attack the rim.
3. Blake Lander – Beverly Hills 2020
Lander is a bit of a hybrid guard/forward type player. He’s versatile in that he has both guard and forward abilities. Offensively, he can put the ball on the floor and attack the rim. He can also create his own shot on the perimeter. He’s also a very good rebounder, particularly on the offensive glass. He puts himself in position to secure second chance possessions for his team. He’s very active around the rim too and sets himself up for put back opportunities.
4. Reese Dixon-Waters – St Bernard 2021
Dixon-Waters is another fast rising prospect in Southern California. The former Dorsey guard has drawn plenty of interest from various colleges. He is a wing player, a shooting guard who can maybe slide over and play small forward depending on the lineups. He’s a strong wing who can effectively get to the rim and draw contact to get himself to the free-throw line. Great slashing game. He can handle the ball like a point guard too and be a facilitator. Can shoot from the outside.
5. Jabari Steward – Compton 2020
Steward has a very versatile game for a big man. He is very talented in the post and can use his size well to overpower most defenders. He gets good post position and once he gets the ball, he’s very decisive when making a move in the paint. Great finisher around the rim. He has some nice spin moves to get to the rim. He can also stretch the floor and shoot from three-point range. Defensively, he makes his presence felt. Good shot blocker who alters many others.
