NORWALK, Ca.—One of the best events of the Fall evaluation period is the Ron Massey Fall Hoops Classic, directed by Dinos Trigonis. Ron Massey, who coached at Long Beach Jordan High School, captured CIF Southern Section titles and mentored a plethora of student athletes during his tenure. If he were still pacing the sidelines to day, I’m sure he would be marveling at the dynamic talents of 7-foot senior Evan Mobley—who literally exhibited in every which way why he is considered the No. 1 prospect in the national class of 2020.
Ramel Lloyd Jr. (Taft)
2022, WF, 6-foot-5, 165 pounds
Lloyd has much-improved ball skills and his shot has become much smootherJoel’s Take: The long and rangy Lloyd has grown the last year and his game has as well. He has very good length, budding ball skills, and an improved shot from the perimeter. He excels in transition while attacking the lane and his passing acumen has improved as well—but that shouldn’t be a surprise since his father played Division 1 basketball at Long Beach State.
Jared McCain (Corona Centennial)
2023, PG, 5-foot-11, 155 pounds
Joel’s Take: One of the better looking freshmen entering high school has to be McCain. The true point guard prospect has a good frame with long arms, but it’s his skill set and feel for the game that stand out. He’ll rebound in traffic, snap look-ahead passes with either hand, and convert jump shots from the mid-range to the 3-point line.
Jeremiah Whitmore (Corona Centennial)
2023, WF, 6-foot-5, 180 pounds
Joel’s Take: Whitmore is a lengthy left-hander with long arms and big hands. He is a chiseled athlete who is quite bouncy in the paint area and very active at Both ends. Due to his timing he gets numerous offensive putbacks and can defend the rim as well. He shows touch in the paint area, but his ball skills and range on his shot need to continue to evolve.
Xavier Edmonds (Bishop Montgomery)
2023, C, 6-foot-7, 220 pounds
Joel’s Take: The more I watch Edmonds the more I see a bright future for this young “big”. He has very good length, magnetic hands, and he can score inside out. He isn’t a quick jumper quite yet, but he knows how to carve out space and he has good instincts in the paint area—not too mention his touch out to 20-feet is quite soft.
Benny Gealer (Rolling Hills Prep)
2022, PG, 6-foot, 160 pounds
Gealer has remarkable poise and confidence for a sophomore point guardJoel’s Take: One term that comes immediately to mind for Gealer is “fearless”. This kid is relentelss at Both ends and he isn’t afraid of the moment. He may take an ill-advised shot now-and-again, but he converts more often than not. He has a quick release, excellent ball skills, and pushes the ball well.
