NORWALK, Ca.—One of the best events of the Fall evaluation period is the Ron Massey Fall Hoops Classic, directed by Dinos Trigonis. Ron Massey, who coached at Long Beach Jordan High School, captured CIF Southern Section titles and mentored a plethora of student athletes during his tenure. If he were still pacing the sidelines to day, I’m sure he would be marveling at the dynamic talents of 7-foot senior Evan Mobley—who literally exhibited in every which way why he is considered the No. 1 prospect in the national class of 2020.
Evan Mobley (Rancho Christian)
2020, PF, 6-foot-11, 220 pounds
Mobley was a shot blocking machine this weekend (Photo Scott Kurtz)Joel’s Take: Mobley, who is arguably the best prospect in high school basketball, put together the most awe-inspiring sequence in a semi-final game against Coronado and Jaden Hardy. Rasheed Wallace-like smash in the paint, an Alonzo Mourning-type block in the paint, and finished off with a LeBron James-like pass in transition—yah that pretty much sums it up for Mobley.
Atin Wright (Fairmont Prep)
2020, SG, 5-foot-11, 160 pounds
Joel’s Take: The fearless Wright is always in attack mode when driving to the basket. He has the strength to take on the contact and the vertical to finish over the bigs. If the defender backs off he can stick the 3-point shot. How this translates to Division 1 basketball remains to be seen, but he has the ability to play somewhere in D1.
Judah Brown (Pacifica Christian)
2020, WF/PF, 6-foot-5, 175 pounds
Joel’s Take: The ever-improving Brown has all the physical tools (monster athlete) to be make an impact at St. Marys (verbal commitment). He has long arms, improved ball skills, and his jump shot is on the come. His decision making (over-handles) needs polishing, but he is one of the more improved prospects in So-Cal.
Tyrelle Hunt (Coronado/NV)
2020, PF, 6-foot-5, 220 pounds
Joel’s Take: Mr. Blue Collar is a stud—there is no better adjective to describe him. He plays with zero emotion and makes a significant impact at both ends. He’s undersized, but he knows how to carve out space, has a nose for the ball, and his touch to the elbow is solid. He was definitely the “glue” for a Coronado team that made a nice run in this tournament.
Daishen Nix (Trinity International/NV)
2020, PG/WF, 6-foot-5, 215 pounds
Joel’s Take: Nix has had a national reputation since his sophomore season, and rightfully so. The big-bodied point guard is a tremendous passer both in transition as well as in the half court set. However, his lack of explosiveness and quickness was evident this weekend while attacking defenders and finishing at the rim. It will be interesting to see what his role will be at UCLA because his size and savvy for the game is impressive.
