NORWALK, Ca.—One of the best events of the Fall evaluation period is the Ron Massey Fall Hoops Classic, directed by Dinos Trigonis. Ron Massey, who coached at Long Beach Jordan High School, captured CIF Southern Section titles and mentored a plethora of student athletes during his tenure. If he were still pacing the sidelines today, I’m sure he would be marveling at the dynamic talents of 7-foot senior Evan Mobley—who literally exhibited in every which way why he is considered the No. 1 prospect in the national class of 2020.
Dominick Harris (Rancho Christian)
2020, SG, 6-foot-2, 170 pounds
Joel’s Take: Harris, who has been committed to Gonzaga since his sophomore, is a talented scorer from all three levels. He attacks well in transition due to his length, ball skills, and explosiveness. When he is set his jump shot is solid and he gets good lift on it. However, Harris’ decision making can be problematic. Pounding the ball instead of advancing it, taking ill-advised shots, and being turnover prone are issues that need to cleaned up when he arrives in Spokane.
Mwani Wilkinson (Bishop Gorman)
2020, WF, 6-foot-5, 200 pounds
Wilkinson has some DeMar DeRozan in his gameJoel’s Take: One of the bigger revelations of the spring and summer was the emergeance of Wilkinson. The powerful wing-type is as explosive as any prospect in the West and his upside is immense. However, despite his athletic prowess, he still needs to learn this game. His jump shot is on the come, but his ball skills against pressure need work. His work on the block was impressive as was his defensive prowess (shot blocking), but reading defenses (savvy) is the next step in his game.
Jabari Stewart (Compton)
2020, PF, 6-foot-7, 230 pounds
Joel’s Take: Stewart has all the skill to be a Division 1 power forward. He has great hands, good feet, and knows how to create space on the block. He can step out and hit jump shots from the elbow to the 3-point line and his passing is impressive as well. He needs to improve his stamina as well as his motor to reach his potential, however.
Devin Askew (Mater Dei)
2021, PG, 6-foot-4, 190 pounds
Joel’s Take: Askew had an exceptional summer both as a scorer and facilitator. He has the power to get into the lane and finish and he’s a natural scorer from the arc to the lane, albeit his mid-range skills need to improve. This weekend he forced the issue in the paint area and became a bit turnover prone as a result. Learning the balance of facilitating an offense and taking over is the next step in his development.
Trent Goldman (Bishop Montgomery)
2021, WF, 6-foot-4, 180 pounds
Joel’s Take: Each and every season Bishop Montgomery has another player that emerges and it appears Goldman has the goods to deliver. He has long arms and a smooth shooting touch that extends to 20-feet. His release is a bit slow, but he is always on balance and his shot is there everytime. Rebounding and a solid overall feel for the game were also noticeable traits for this junior prospect.
