Continue ReadingAfter winning a state title with Jesuit last season, Matthew Levis was focused on his goals for this summer – keep improving up on his game and catch the eye of college colleges. Consider both complete for the 6-foot senior combo guard. Levis stepped up with his skills with International Elite in AAU travel ball and college coaches on the sidelines certainly made note to watch him this upcoming season, including the PrepHoops Top 250 Expo on Sunday.
“I was pretty happy with how we played this summer – we played really good basketball and I played well,” Levis said. “I really stepped up on attacking the rim more. My shot was kind of falling in one tournament, not as much as I would have liked it to so I took a different approach to the game and by the next tournament my shot was falling more. I then had shooting and the ability to drive, so I was then a threat from all over.”
Of course, Levis was his usual self on the defensive end, providing intensity and energy as an individual defender which was contagious to the rest of the team. “Defense is where I really like to rally,” Levis said. “That’s kind of always been my thing.”
In addition to improving his game, Levis wanted to amp up his recruitment and that certainly has started to take shape. He earned his first scholarship offer from Concordia in Portland and more could be on the way. Chaminade has shown interest in watching him this season and he is scheduled to take a visit to Azusa Pacific in October. He’s hopeful that may result in an offer.
“I’m really hoping so because just from what I’ve heard about the school and what I’ve seen on their website it looks like a great school and I feel like I could have a really good time in college down there,” Levis said. “Not to mention it’s in California, and California is… California. So they’re pretty high on the list, along with Chaminade.”
As things develop, Levis isn’t in any rush to make any decisions. “I definitely want to play out the year just in case something else comes up that might be out of the blue,” Levis said. “I’ve been in contact a little with with Seattle U and if I have a really good senior season and get a little more interest from them, I could walk-on there or any school like that – I would love that opportunity and might take that pretty quickly.”
Next up for Levis is the PrepHoops Top 250 Expo. There he’ll match up with and against many familiar faces, from AAU teammates such as Jamison Guerra to other top guards such as Jesse White. Levis is up for anything and everything.
“I’m looking forward to seeing all those guys as it’s been awhile since I’ve had some good competition at the guard spot,” Levis said. “I think it’s going to be an interesting event mostly because it’s going to be a way different dynamic than what a lot of us are used to. We’re used to playing each other league and maybe seeing each other outside of league for a few games.”
“So throwing us all together and seeing how we perform together against each other, it’s going to be a completely different dynamic for me and all those guys,” Levis said. “I think it’s going to be really interesting and pretty fun too.”
Levis currently ranks as the #55 player in the PrepHoops Oregon Class of 2020 rankings.
