The tough 6-foot-4, 190-pound junior has done a bit of everything at Wilsonville the past couple of years and has been a key part of the Wildcats success during that time. Shivers got a chance to shine and step up his game a little more this summer with Elite 24 and college programs took notice – and one school recently stepped up and gave him his first scholarship offer.
Over the weekend, OIT decided they liked what they saw out of Shivers and offered him a scholarship. “There’s a connection them with Coach (Chris) Roche, with Harrison Steiger and Tyler Hieb there,” Shivers said. “I’m just really thankful for the opportunity and excited to get down and visit in a couple weeks.”
OIT was one of a growing list of schools currently looking at Shivers. Whitworth has been in contact and so have Northwest Nazarene and Point Loma Nazarene, two schools he camped at this summer. “I really liked both campuses and liked the coaching staffs,” Shivers said. “I was able to talk to them at both and they said that they were happy that I was at the camp and that they hoped to see how I continue to develop.”
Shivers is an all-around player whose versatility and ability to be a glue guy brings back some of the qualities former Oregon Ducks and South Medford star E.J. Singler brought to the table as a younger player. Also a standout baseball player, Shivers didn’t play in the spring but quickly made up for lost time in the summer months.
“This summer I felt really good going in as I wasn’t sure if I was going to be able to play or not,” Shivers said. “It was the right decision to go all basketball this summer. It was really fun playing with the team and we had a lot of good talent and we competed really well and our chemistry was really good. Individually I learned a lot and I shot the ball pretty good.”
While he has the offer in hand, Shivers isn’t rushing the process. “My recruitment started kind of late because I didn’t play in the spring,” Shivers said. “So right now I’m just talking to people and getting to know them, improving my game right now so when the season comes around they can see how I’m coming along. I’ve improved a lot this summer and I’m going to go out there and prove that I can hang with everyone and show improvement to people.”
“I want to become the best shooter that I can so I’ve been shooting a lot,” Shivers continued. “I’m also working on my ball-handling as I want to be able to bring the ball up when I need to, and I want to keep on getting bigger and stronger and stay in shape for when the season comes.”
Wilsonville figures to be in good shape to defend their 5A title and Shivers is ready for the challenge. “I think it’s going to be a really fun season,” Shivers said. “I’ve played with these guys for the past three years and we have a really good chemistry. I’m excited to compete against some of the top teams in the state and see if we can get to our goal. It should be a really fun year.”
