Today Prep Hoops caught up with Matthew Mors to review the outstanding spring and summer he put together plus we found out what ten major conference programs are showing the most interest.
Mors has spent the last six years playing with the South Dakota Attack leading the team to a 23-5 record. What Mors has learned from the Attack is more than just on the court, he’s learned how to compete with dignity with the friends he has around him.
“I’ve been playing with the Attack since I was a sixth grader and I’ve loved every minute of it,” Matthew said. “We practice a lot more than a normal AAU team would. Before the grassroots season starts, we practice Friday, Saturday, and Sundays with a workout fit in there too. This has developed my game as I have taken stuff from their workouts back home and practice them myself.
“From top to bottom, we are a family as a program. Coaches helping coaches, players helping players, all as one. One thing that has stuck out is that they preach the phrases, “ team success=individual success” and “hard work works”. Both are as true as it gets. Being around a program where off court behavior matters more than on the court, has helped shape me into a better person.”
The experience Matthew has had with the South Dakota Attack has carried over to Matthew’s high school team, the Yankton Bucks. The Bucks won the state title in 2018 and made the state tournament last March.
“I play similar roles for both teams and I have been working on being the best leader I can be,” Mors said. “Another thing is the competion during AAU is different from a high school season. Learning to score and defend against people who are more athletic transition into the high school setting.”
Mors will finish his career as one of the best players in the history of South Dakota High School basketball. If he never played another game the career he’s had would rank with the best. College programs are in regular contact and media attention increases with each month that Mors competes. So how does a 16 year old handle this type of attention?
“I rely on my faith, and hanging with family and friends,” Matthew said. “All of these things calm me down when things start to get intense and I need to get away.”
Mors ran us through ten high major programs that are in regular contact and they are, “Colorado, Creighton, Iowa, Iowa State, Wisconsin, Arkansas, Texas Tech, Purdue, TCU, and Stanford,” Mors said.
Next up for Matthew is visits. He has one scheduled for later this month.
“I have one scheduled so far and that’s the 28th weekend at Wisconsin later this month. We have to find other dates for officials yet, I’m not sure where I will go either.”
What is Mors looking for while he’s taking these visits?
“I’ve seen quite a few campuses, I’m just looking at everything they have to offer,” Matthew said. “Both with basketball and education. Getting to know some of the players and coaches has been really cool, just continue to grow that relationship.”
