Recruiting Report: Kaylen Oweh (2020)
This past Saturday, I entered Wise High School for the DMV Elite 80 not knowing what to expect from many prospects that I hadn’t had the chance to see live before. As the drill portion of the event got underway, it didn’t take long for 2020 guard Kaylen Oweh to make his mark as a standout.
Oweh is about to embark on a post-grad year at Mercersburg Academy in Pennsylvania. He was previously at Rutgers Prep where he played next to 2021 wing Trey Patterson, who is regarded as a top-50 player in his class. Oweh’s game has attracted multiple Division I programs enough to offer him, but with an increased role this season, he’ll have plenty of opportunities to fully showcase his skill set. I wouldn’t be shocked to see more schools offer the 6-foot-4 combo guard.
I caught up with Oweh during the DMV Elite 80 and covered a variety of topics:
PH: How was last season at Rutgers Prep for you?
KO: Our team last year had a lot of potential and talent. We had five-star Trey Patterson, Jonah Charles, Noah Harris and myself. We had a good squad. We could’ve went deeper in the playoffs, but it definitely was a good experience.
PH: What were some things you had set out on improving in your game this spring and summer that you felt like you achieved?
KO: My shooting. I have a lot more confidence in my shooting now and before it was a little iffy. After countless hours in the gym, I’m a knock down shooter now.
PH: How would you describe your game?
KO: Someone who creates for others. I can get to the basket at will and knock down the open shot. And just execute everything.
PH: What has Coach Crocker told you to expect as a role for the upcoming season?
KO: He wants me to be a leader. I’m one of the go to guys and I need to get my teammates involved. When the game is tight and we need a bucket or someone to give the game-winning assist, I’m the guy that can make that happen.
PH: Aside from your shooting, what are some other areas of your game that you set out to improve on for the next level?
KO: My ball handling. Coming off the ball screen and making the right reads. Being able to see the open man that the defense doesn’t see on the weak side.
PH: Give an update on your recruitment.
KO: I have offers from Stony Brook, NJIT and Canisius. Columbia and Lehigh have shown interest in me as well.
PH: What can you bring to a college program?
KO: Someone that can run the offense. Someone that can get to the rim at will, but when I get to the rim, I can also create for shooters on the perimeter and dump down passes to the bigs.
