Rickard, a 6-foot-1 point guard, averaged better than 17 points and nearly four assists as a junior. He had a terrific summer playing with Inspired Athletics, taking his game to another level.
“I feel like I definitely progressed more on expanding my game as more than a scorer,” said Rickard. “I became more of a defender and leader and I think that’ll help translate into the high school season and beyond.”
Rickard’s been a really talented scorer for a while now, but his defense picked up big over the summer where he showed he can lock up on talented perimeter players and wreak havoc off the ball. He’s improved as a floor-general type as well, finding that balance between hunting his own offense and getting teammates involved when the situation calls for it.
The Spartans have some talented returners and no shortage of young talent in the program. That has Rickard excited about what could be coming this winter.
“We have a lot of returning players and some guys that we think can step into bigger roles,” said Rickard. “Alijah Armstrong and Jacob Brosius are guys that I’m excited about stepping up for us and there are some other guys that’ll have to be ready for new roles too. This year I think I’ll be more of a leader and I think we have some stuff where I can get off the ball. I’ll still have to do a lot of the things I did last year, just be more efficient with it.”
Rickard’s been sought-after by a number of programs this summer and into the fall months as he recently picked up an offer from Dickinson State. He’s got a lot of options available beyond high school.
“I’ve talked to Hamline, Northwestern, Morris, Augsburg, Concordia; and then I’ve got offers from Valley City, Bryant and Stratton, St. Johns and Dickinson State,” Rickard said. “I’ve taken most of those visits, I might set up a few more here soon too.”
