The Hawks were led by 6’8″ Gaven Pinkley, a 2018 graduate and four-year standout who is now at Central Missouri State. He is the school’s career scoring and rebounding leader. Stepping into Pinkley’s shoes was 6’5″ Mike Brewer, who was Pinkley’s sidekick for two years, but elevated his game to average 20 points a game and lead the Hawks to a district title. Brewer is now playing professional baseball in the Texas Rangers organization.
The 6’7″ Worley joined Brewer on the front line last season, but will now be the main man up front for the Hawks as they hope to keep up their winning ways. Worley should be more than up to the task with his versatile game that includes low post scoring and 3-point shooting. He recently picked up his first offer from Millikin University (IL) and has also received interest from Missouri Southern, Sterling, and SUNY.
“I felt very blessed to receive my first offer from Millikin,” Worley said. “I had a great visit with coaches (Mark) Scherer and (Kramer) Soderberg. They are really doing a lot to improve their program.
Worley transferred to Hillsboro midway through the 2019 season along with his brother Ethan Worley and flourished at his new school. In 13 games with the Hawks, Worley averaged 10.9 points, 7.2 rebounds and 2.3 blocks while shooting 58 percent from the field while helping his team win another Class 4 district title. Worley scored 15 points and grabbed five rebounds in the district-championship game victory against Lutheran South. The Hawks figure to have another strong team with several key players returing for the upcoming season.
“It would be great to repeat as conference and district champions again,” he said. “We have a solid team coming back this year and we should be able to make a good run.”
Worley had a very productive summer with his high school teammates during the team camp circuit and also with the SI Select during the grassroots season. He helped lead the SI Select to the national championship at the Amateur Athletic Union 17U tournament in Florida. During the summer, Worley showcased his improved 3-point stroke to make himself a legitimate Stretch 4 prospect.
“Playing with SI Select was a great experience overall,” he said. “My coach encouraged me to expand my game on both sides of the court, which really improved my level of play. The 3-point shot has really opened my game up. I can spread the defense by bringing out a taller defender or use my post skills against smaller ones.”
