In the Class of 2020, Steven Long certainly qualifies as a diamond in the rough. The lanky 6-foot-3, 165-pound wing was stashed away on JV as Tigard had a senior-heavy varsity last year, but this season Long is ready to step things up. The high-academic athlete has put in the hard work and time and his hope is that the college interest increases – starting with this Sunday at the PrepHoops Top 250 Expo.
“I’ve been working hard all summer, trying to get in the gym as much as I can,” Long said. “I definitely worked on shooting and I’m a lot better shooter than I used to be. It was good playing for Team Fly Select (Perrault) – he was a really good coach as he really believes in you and gives you a lot of freedom and lets you make mistakes. I was able to play my game and grow a lot more, improve and learn for myself.”
Watch Long perform and it won’t be long before you spot the potential. He’s long, lanky, and athletic and finishes well at the rim. He handles the ball well for a wing and his outside shot continues to get more consistent. And with a 4.15 GPA and looking seriously at majoring in Aerospace Engineering in college, he’s got the academic resume that’s already attracted the attention of some high-academic schools on both coasts.
“I went to a camp on the East Coast at Columbia (this summer) and I’ve talked to Bard College and they’re pretty interested in me,” Long said. “Lewis & Clark – I’ve visited them and I’m also going to a D-II camp at Queens in North Carolina. I’ve also talked to Redlands a little bit and Buena Vista, they’ve texted me too.”
Long has been working out with HoopDreams Basketball and trainer Kumbeno Memory has reached out to some other schools to get the word out. With interest from all over, Long is just taking everything in right now and keeping his options open. “The goal is to play at the highest level I can in college,” Long said. “I know it’s late but I’m just trying to get as many offers as I can.”
Long will get another chance to impress at the PrepHoops Oregon Top 250 Expo. He’ll match up against the likes of the state’s best and he can’t wait. “It’s going to be great getting to play against the top guys in Oregon,” Long said. “It’s a way for me to prove myself against them and improve.”
