As an 8th grader, the 6’5″, 180-pounder averaged 8.8 PPG for the 11-16 Spartans. Miles had 11 double-digit games a season ago including a 20-point, 14-rebound performance against Divine Savior.
He says this summer with AAU helped a lot in terms of competing at a higher level. Miles played for both the Warriors and SOH Elite as he says he is looking to get an idea of who he is looking to play for in the summer of 2020.
“We had a solid season and played many top teams and against elite players,” Miles told Prep Hoops. “Playing at this level gave me a better idea of how I stack up against kids in my class on a national scale.”
No offers or interest have come just yet for the freshman, but he says he’s confident that will change in the near future.
“Many scouts have told me that I have a great skill set and I have a lot of potential so right now I’m just focused on improving my game and getting stronger,” Miles said.
In terms of playing varsity ball as an 8th grader, he said he learned a lot from that.
“The athletes were bigger and more experienced than what I’ve been used to so I had to become more confident and get stronger,” he said. “I’m looking forward to just keep improving my game during my freshman season and helping my team any way I can. We don’t really have any ‘bigs’ so I want to develop my inside game more so I can put more points on the board for my team.
…I have to step up as a leader this year and help my team because despite being younger than everyone, I have more overall experience than most of them. We have a young team so our main goal right now is to win our district and then get as far as we can in regionals and states. This is going to be a big year for the growth of me and my teammates.”
In terms of his top strengths, Miles alluded to his jumper, court vision/passing and rebounding ability. He says he’s aiming to improve his dribble under pressure (especially with his left), being more explosive at the rim and playing through bad calls and fouls.
Miami Country Day returns 2021 5’11” guard Jordan Cooke who averaged 13.1 PPG a season ago. Miles will have the brunt of the duties and he knows that. He says his team relies on him.
Moving down to Class 3A-District 14 after the revamped Florida classes were made this summer, Miami Country Day will compete against Divine Savior, Doctors Charter, Hialeah Educational, SLAM Miami and International Studies for the district crown. Expect Miles to have a breakout freshman campaign, he’s simply too long, too athletic and too driven to not have a big year.
