I took a different approach this time around. Instead of looking for standout individuals from any team in the field, I opted to focus on individuals from the teams that were kind enough to share their roster information with me prior to the tournament.
The G1 Athletes were one of those teams. They play well together as a unit. Their players don’t play a lot of hero ball, which is refreshing to see. They’re an athletic group of kids who play great team basketball. Here are few individuals from the team who caught my eye:
Nehemiah (Nemo) Connor – 2020 6’3 Wing (Colleyville Covenant Christian Academy) – I think this kid might have slipped through the cracks. He’s still a little raw, but Connor has tons of upside. If he works on bulking up a little and filling out his long frame, watch out. There’s a lot to like about this kid. Due to his relative size, the G1 Athletes used him in the post a lot. However, I believe he operates best offensively when he is playing out on the perimeter. He’s really twitchy for his size and has a quick first step. He also uses a lot of ball fakes to free himself up. Additionally, Connor is consistent with the three ball and his shooting mechanics are solid. I loved what I saw from him in this tournament.
Jacob Helzer – 2020 5’10 Combo Guard (Denton Calvary Academy) – Now this kid doesn’t need to do any bulking up. It’s pretty clear that he already lives in the weight room. After doing a little research online I discovered that on top of playing basketball, Helzer is also the starting running back for Denton Calvary’s varsity six-man football team. Furthermore, he’s coming of a 1,000-yard season. He definitely looks like a bell cow running back. On the hardwood, Helzer plays more like a quarterback. The multi-sport senior is an excellent facilitator. He doesn’t force up bad shots and rarely turns the ball over. He’s also capable of getting his own. His football background combined with his strength really help him out when he is attacking the basket.
Danny Arambula – 2020 5’8 Guard (Eaton HS) – Arambula is one of those players who is always playing downhill. He’s a speedy ball handler who likes to play up tempo. He may be on the shorter side, but he isn’t afraid to throw his body around and mix it up with the big boys down low. I love his fearlessness on offense. He used his quickness to split double teams a couple different times. Arambula is also a scrappy defender with quick hands. In the final two minutes of a close game, he came up with a big steal and laid it in at the other end.
Clay Coyle – 2020 5’10 Guard (ILTexas Keller HS) – I love watching players who can do a little bit of everything. Clay Coyle is one of those players. He’s versatile on offense and is probably the best perimeter defender on his team. Coyle also isn’t afraid to take the last shot. He hit a game winning mid-range jumper in his team’s first game of the tournament as time expired. I think it says a lot about a prospect when their coach and teammates opt to put the ball in said prospect’s hands on the final possession of a game. He’s an excellent 3 and D guy.
The G1 Athlete’s came away from the PrimeTime Sports Fall Challenge 2019 with some hardware, finishing third in the high school division. Their lack of ball dominant players makes them a fun team to watch. I’ll definitely be checking out some of these individuals’ high school games later this year to get another look at them.
