A springy, 6-9 power forward, Winkel plays above the rim and protects the paint with the best of them in the state. He’s the division’s leading returning scorer and second leading rebounder. The Golden Bears should be near the top of the division again this year, and Winkel is the biggest reason why.
First Team
2021 Angelo Winkel, Bishop Garrigan (16.6 points, 9.5 rebounds, 1.8 assists, 2.6 blocks, 58.6 FG%)
A big, athletic forward who plays above the rim and runs the floor, Winkel should average a double-double this year for the Golden Bears and serve as a major rim protector.
2020 Chett Helming, Lake Mills (16.4 points, 4.7 rebounds, 1.4 assists, 1.3 blocks, 56.4 FG%)
A highly efficient, 6-5 wing, Helming is the most important piece for a Bulldogs team that we have ranked #1 in 1A to open the year. He can score from all three levels, led the team in blocks and finished second in rebounding last year.
2020 Landon Dalbeck, Garner-Hayfield-Ventura (13.3 points, 3.6 rebounds, 1.9 assists, 1.4 steals)
The 6-4 wing led the Cardinals in steals and was second in scoring last season. With James Betz now at UNI, Dalbeck’s scoring should see a major uptick.
2021 Caleb Bacon, Lake Mills (12.0 points, 10.6 rebounds, 3.0 assists, 2.2 steals, 61.3 FG%)
Bacon is just 6-3, but he is one of only a handful of players to average a double-double last year. He’s a force on both ends of the floor on the glass, averaging over 5 offensive rebounds a game last year.
2021 Dominyk Price, North Iowa (15.2 points, 2.6 rebounds, 2.0 assists, 1.3 steals, 67 3PM)
Price’s 67 made 3-pointers were far and away the most in the division last year. The Bison won just six games last season, but Price was dominant in those wins, averaging 24 points a game.
