The Cyclones were one of the biggest surprise teams in the state last year, rattling off a 16-7 record, and Phelps was a major reason why. He finished second on the team in scoring and rebounding, while leading them in assists, steals and blocks. The 6-1 junior point guard is the best player in the division, on what we expect to be the best team.
First Team
2021 Bryce Phelps, Denver (15.7 points, 5.9 rebounds, 6.5 assists, 2.9 steals)
Second behind his teammate Kyler Matthias in returning scoring, Phelps is also the leading returnee in both assists and steals in the division. A stat sheet stuffing point guard, he’s the focal point for a Cyclones team that should be the best in the division, and one of the best in 2A.
2021 Kyler Matthias, Denver (15.8 points, 3.0 rebounds, 2.9 assists, 1.5 steals, 78 3PM)
The 6-1 off-guard is the leading returning scorer in the division, and his 78 made 3-pointers last year led the division. A versatile scoring threat with the ability to fill it up from all three levels, he pairs nicely with Phelps and Isaac Besh in the Cyclones’ backcourt.
2020 Kiks Rosengarten, Wapsie Valley (15.6 points, 9.3 rebounds, 1.1 blocks, 53.1 FG%)
The 6-5 forward was a solid secondary option for the Warriors last year alongside high-scoring guard Paul Rundquist, and should emerge as the go-to threat this year. He’s second in the division in returning rebounding (Columbus’ Cannon Butler), and should average a double-double this year.
2020 James Stimson, Sumner-Fredericksburg (13.5 points, 2.6 rebounds, 2.5 assists, 1.3 steals)
Last year’s 11 wins were the most successful Sumner-Fredericksburg has been in quite a while, and the lefty wing was a big reason why. He led the team in scoring and made 3s, and if he can improve his efficiency (32.5 FG% last year), he could have a huge year.
2021 Dane Fuller, Dike-New Hartford (9.9 points, 3.0 rebounds, 2.8 assists, 1.7 steals, 50.0 FG%)
The leading returning scorer for a Wolverines team that lost a lot of production, look for Fuller to emerge as one of the league’s best scoring threats. D-NH is always one of the top programs in the area, and Fuller should help keep them there. His 38 steals last year led the team.
