Austin put up his numbers at Des Moines Hoover last year, but has made the transfer over to North for this season. A talented junior guard who is at his best playing downhill and getting to the rim, he should thrive in North’s up-tempo system.
First Team
2021 Manny Austin, Des Moines North (14.6 points, 3.5 rebounds, 1.3 assists, 2.0 steals)
After putting up big numbers for a Hoover team that generally plays at one of the slowest paces in 4A, Austin should thrive in North’s more up-tempo system after his transfer.
2021 Trae Swartz, Ottumwa (14.9 points, 5.9 rebounds, 1.2 assists, 51.7 FG%)
The leading returning scorer in the division, Swartz is a bright spot for a Bulldogs team that won just six games last year. His 51.7% from the floor showcase some high-level efficiency, especially considering the fact that he’s the focal point of every opposing game plan.
2021 Malik Allen, Des Moines North (12.1 points, 3.9 rebounds, 3.1 assists, 2.9 steals)
A strong, physical junior guard, Allen is a menace on both ends of the floor. His 43 steals last year ranked third in the division, behind only graduated teammates Tyreke Locure and Lino Malual. He’ll be the go-to player on both ends of the floor for the Polar Bears.
2020 Nate Feller, Des Moines Lincoln (8.5 points, 5.6 rebounds, 1.8 assists)
With the Rails top two scorers from last year graduated, scoring opportunities will open up for Feller and Ben Badger, a second-teamer. Feller ranked second on the team in rebounding last year and is a capable playmaker who can score from all three levels.
2020 Romanique Hellems, Des Moines Roosevelt (10.8 points, 6.3 rebounds, 1.3 assists, 1.4 steals)
A long, talented and athletic wing for the Roughriders, Hellems has a chance to have a monstrous senior year as the other four players who averaged in double figures last year have all either graduated or transferred. He led the team in rebounding last year as well.
Second Team
2021 Wil Burt, Des Moines East
2020 Gore Puot, Des Moines North
2020 Ben Badger, Des Moines Lincoln
2022 Jonathan Beverly, Des Moines Hoover
