Murphy is a gunner by trade, as he launched 208 threes last season and connected on 40.4 percent of them. The fireworks will continue, only bigger and brighter this time around.
Preseason First-Team:
Riley Murphy, G, Seymour – Murphy, who played with the Wisconsin Crusaders this summer, wasn’t at all gun-shy playing alongside other elite talents. If he can improve on his percentage without tamping down his aggressiveness, then we’re looking at opening the floodgates to his division two and three recruitment.
Carter Weisnicht, F, Shawano: After putting up 19.8 points per game in a breakout junior year, Weisnicht is in store for a first-team campaign. The big man showed on multiple occasions that he’s liable to finish above the rim. He can rebound in high quantities, averaging 10.4 per game last season and becoming a walking double-double. And in the post, Weisnicht can finish in a variety of ways and fashions that point toward his potential to be a college prospect.
Gus Yalden, F, Xavier – Yalden will arrive at Xavier with plenty of baggage for a freshman. National camp appearances, a stint with Team Griffin, an offer to join Hillcrest Prep next year … it’s clear he has accumulated quite the resume. Now it’s time to deliver. With Xavier’s top-two scorers gone via graduation, I see Yalden contending for the first option on offense. At 6-foot-8, he has the toolset to score inside and out, while a few big performances in summer league raise little doubt that he can make an immediate impact at this level.
John Bunks Jr., G, Xavier – As the third-leading scorer last season, Bunks looks to extend a solid year with some fine-tuning and development. He could easily slide into the 16-18 points per game category, as he made 50 percent of his shots last year while only shooting 10.4 times per game. Look for him to be more aggressive next year, and as that increases, his reputation will go hand-in-hand.
Garret Locy, G, New London – Locy could very easily find himself as the conference POTY. The guard averaged 21 points per game last season, connecting on nearly 100 total treys. Despite being undersized, he has a nose for the hoop. Whether it’s a series of fakes or his maneuvering in the trenches, he can find the bucket on anyone in the conference. Look for him to have a big year statistically and on the recruiting trail.
