Throughout this week, I’ll be taking a look at some players to watch who have are already confirmed to attend. I’ll now move to the 2021 wings.
Jared Billups | 6’6 | McDonogh
Billups is one of the diamonds in the rough that attended last year’s event and stood out. This season should be the coming out party as the 6-foot-6 wing not only has solidified himself as a lock down defender who can guard multiple positions, but also a threat in the open floor with his strength and athleticism. We haven’t seen many players take bigger strides in terms of their overall development like Billups has. It’ll be fun watching him put it to the test once more before the high school season.
David Brown III | 6’5 | Bishop McNamara
Brown made the announcement that he would transfer to Bishop McNamara and play in the WCAC this summer. He showed last season at McDonogh that he can fill up the scoring column in a hurry. The 6-foot-5 guard is a knock down shooter from three and mid-range. Throughout the summer, he showed improvement in his ability to finish in transition and through contact. He’ll be on the watch list for Saturday for sure.
Jordan Brathwaite | 6’7 | Glenelg Country
Brathwaite has experienced a boost in his stock after a productive summer. The 6-foot-7 wing, who can also be featured at the four spot, runs the floor well and has above average athleticism that makes him a handful in transition. Saturday should offer a great stage for Brathwaite to further showcase his athleticism and improved mid-range jump shot. The good thing is throughout the summer at various events, he played extremely hard on both ends.
Terrence Butler Jr. | 6’7 | Bishop McNamara
Butler is also likely going to be considered a four at the next level, but he has showed continued improvement with his perimeter ability. The 6-foot-7 Bishop McNamara standout was a workhorse at last year’s event and was dominant for much of the game portion. I expect much of the same from Butler in this year’s event.
Ramon Villanueva | 6’4 | Sparrows Point
Villanueva is one that the majority may not know of, but his performance throughout the Elite Basketball Academy Summer League led his team to the championship and him winning MVP. At 6-foot-4, Villanueva is the definition of efficient. He can score from all three levels, rebound, pass and move without the ball. He won’t blow anyone away with his athleticism, but his IQ for the game gives him the upper hand when playing against more athletic opponents.
